THE LEDGER. Tliurlow S. Carter, EDITOR AND MANAGER. WKI)N KSl)AY, MAY 17, 1899. | For The Ledger. Commander Porter Tells of the Lancaster Veterans at the Keuniou. Mr. Kditok:?April Oth, 1865 will never be forgotten as the day on which Lee Surrendered. May Oth, 1800 will long live in the memory of those who attended the 1'. C. V. at Charleston. Shortly after 10 o'clock, the train arrived at Lancaster. One by one they kept coming until Lancaster county had a very good representation. Just before leaving the depot, the Dixie ('amp was formed in line and a beautiful banner was presented in a few appropriate words by Hon W C Hough, in behalf of its donor, Miss Clara Barrett, who is sponsor for Camp Dixie. The banner was then placed in the hands of veteran $ K Csher. All then boarded the train and our journey began. When we reached Kershaw we wore joined by Commander Jas V Welsh of Kershaw Camp, Col Hough, Capt Hauiel and others. After reaching Charleston the survivors were formed in line with instructions to await orders. Soon Cape Welsh, Col Hough and Commander Porter returned with orders to go in camp. The line of march was formed. Something over two miles distance to go. To my surprise the old veterans could keep the step as well as in days gone by. Quarters reached each man was given a nice cot, blanket, fresh water and clean towels. Next morning we rose early and m trehed to a place fitted up as a h t d; it seated twelve hundred. There we were well fed ami well treated. This hotel was in charge of Capt White, a kindhearted, noble veteran. Break, fast over, the line of march was again begun ? going to headquarters for the purpose of getting badges. On account of the immense crowd, the work was necessarily slow. The grand parade was begun at three o'clock. The veterans of each state were formed in divisions. each county to itself. Lancaster's place in the grand march was our right resting on Marion's left. The Marion Camp carried a beautiful banner, showing the picture of a fox, indicating the cunning of (Jen Marion for whom the county was named. As the veterans hc<?un to pass in review, ?vith the sponsors in carriages, the cheering began. A certain beautiful banner hearing the inscription: "DIXIK CAMP. No. 1 17.>. Lancaster, S. C." was the subject of much applause. In the line of march could he scon many an old battle flag, shot and torn to pieces. When Thomson Memorial Auditorium on llutledgc Ayenue was reached, which seated twelve thousand people, the battle tings were all placed together on the rostrum. Every seat was taken in the immense building before the gavel fell upon the table. One could see many old comrades shaking hands; and many a meeting took place between old soldier friends who had been separated for years, while not a few tears trickled down faces, onee full of life, but now grown old by lapse of time. Just before the introduction of lhe speaker, while the sweet drains of 'Dixie'%. .that grand *old song so dear to every South erner, were ringing, tho com man- . der of Camp Dixie arose ami wav- t ed their banner, which was follow- ed by the waving of all the old battle flags. This brought a cheer that tilled the air from tho thou* sands of old veterans. As the applause died away, a beautiful prayer was offered by General Capers. Prayer being over, our I commander, Gen. Gordon arose and introduced General George Moorman as speaker. These are men "Whom power could not corrupt; Whom defeat could not dishonor." May their names endure forever. W. G. A. Porter, ! 'ot's Opinion of the New Mathe matical School Chart?Suggestions as to the Methods of church and School Government. Well, wo have jist got over theuggest skare we ever bad in these>arts. Hit come about in this v-iy. The chart agent, come alongr lere to see tho trustees. He:ound one at home an he tuck lim into a room to sho him thevorkins of hit. Now we all had lerd that hit could talk, so thediart man axed the trustee if helad eny thing he wanted worked. He told him he had a judgment hr* wanted the intrust counted on hit. The chart man axed him whentiit was dew. He told him hit wos (lew on the 1st of May. JNow this ole woman tuck hit inter her lied hit scd judgment day was ? commin on the 1st of May. Weill she spred the nuse an every time hit thundered every feller hit the grit for the church. Well, my way of thinkin ib,. thar are too many saints in thecburches. If they war thined out and sent to heaven, thar wood bo more room fur the others tc> thrive. In Camp Creek there isthree, one redy to cut his daddyin-laws throat, one a kickin up thedevil with his nabors about skool an another that never prays only when ho is a candidate an* that's every two years. Now it these three were taken home to* heaven thar wood be peace am quiet in the church an naborhood; skool. Well, our legislators have1 worked mighty hard to satisfy the prohibition crowd an the* haven't done it yet. Now mj way of thinkin is, they haven't hit upon the rite plan. If they had passed a law to divide theprofits of the dispensaries with thechurches to pay off the salaries of their preachers you never wood* have heard of prohibition ugain.. Yov never wood have herd anymore about educaten children on/ licker money. Well, I'vo got a little more to* sa about the skool charts. They tell me it can do anything. It' can tell when its goin to be warm an when its goin to be cold. Its a pity ole man Lewis Cauthen of Dry Creek dident have one wheiv he was baptised. He got sich u shock that things havent got strait about him vet. Wei!, I hear they nre gittin ti|?> a electrick waggin to run from Lanx.stcr to Tunk since the chair* gnng has worked the road. The} is goin to have so many skool meetins 1 speck it will pay well. They wants I)r. Massey to be conductor an ole man Kagsdale tobe motorman, but he says he don't no about that, the thing mite git rong an kill him before ho cood ax his friends to nroet him irt> heven. Pot.
