HIE LEDGER. J Thnrlow S. Carter, J EDITOR AND MANAGER. I WKPXKSPAY, M IV 10, 1890. \ -?? ? I [For The Ledger, u VAX WYCK 1TKMS. 1 Van Wyck was visited I?v ajl tine rain last Saturday night. v Monday morning the ground had a line plowing season, and the farmers went to their work in a more cheerful mood than for several weeks. Preparation of corn lands is still heing pushed, t and the timely rain will give them j a elianee for getting in u good (, large crop. Cotton is coming up / well and soon will he a stand. \ Catawha Falls picnic had some representatives from Van Wyck. f The little judge left hero Friday v to visit friends and relatives about Lancaster ami in Tank and he on | hand at the Fills on Saturday. Miss Kmma Lee Nisbetof Waxhaw came down Friday morning t and was met at Van Wvek by her e uncle, Mr. .1 M Nisbet and ac* | compunied him on a visit to rela- v tives and friends and enjoyed the J* pleasures and magnificent scenes v of the Falls. c The Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Sadler ? spent several days visiting the ^ people around Van Wvck, Reuluh * and Six Mile communities last c week and the early part of this. t Rev. Sadler will have services at 8 Reuluh and Six Mile chinches t regularly twice each month. h Dr. S A Kell visited the family ' of ,1 L Tillman last Saturday and ' Sunday. He gave us a pleasant i call on Sal unlay evening and J, cracked his jokes as usual. The , Doctor is looking very well and 1 has the appearances that the water , of Belair is agreeing with him tine. Van Wvck has a young sport j who parts his hair in the middle ai limes, wears tail suocs, Knee | Ineeches and rides a bicycle. lie is onlv sixteen years old and rather j diminutive in size. lie has been j trying to sport a moustache, or ! forcing one to grow, but has not i succeeded very well in getting this much desired adornment. Nature has given him a few tiny downs, which he sometimes pencils into bold relief that appears to give the desired effect aw far as looks go I hi t not worth anything when hi* tries to twist them, while talking to his best girl. He makes frequent trips to \\ axhaw and sa\s lie would not have a South Carolina girl for anything. ( )iti m i *s. | For The Ledger. A Wonderful Duck. Kditor Ledger: ? We've often heard of the goose that lay the golden egg, but it has been left till this 2<>th century for a duck to do likewise. It is not the genuine unalloyed gold hut in j color it is the fac simile of that precious metal. Wonders will never cease. I have traveled over1 a great deal of this country and have seen many marvelous inventions, as well as rare curiosities. But never have I oen anything to compare with the ahove curiosity ? a ducks golden egg ? till 1 east my optics on it at the residence of Mr. J T Garrison who resides on a farm near the residence of Mr. MCMurray. Intense interest is manifested in the^ aforesaid egg, and also in the hen's patient sitting. In appearance the egg is not as largo as a goose egg nor as small as a turkey's, yet extraordinarily large for a duck egg. The color, as aforesaid, is of a golden hue; with small blue spots liberally sprinkled over the sboll. Mr iarrison is indebted to one of the j lands employed at the Gypsy amp close to his residence, for he discovery as well as safe deivery of ii to him. It certainly s a marvelous curiosity and ' vould pay any person to travel J nilcsto see it. The strangest fact ibou* the duck that laid it is, it las not laid any kind of an egg ' ] ince, and apparently acts as hough it is bewildered, lost or vorl ied. 4 Gypsy Camp." laeksonham, S C, May 3, 1S99.
