About 2 o'clock Wednesday night 42 hales of cotton were partially destroyed by tire at the Southern depot. The fire is sup- j posed to have originated from a spark from a passing train. Hemphill's paper, remarks: York county is the territory of the First Associate Reformed Presbytery, which denounced tho dispensary some years ago, but said nothing against the barrooms in the North Carolina part of the Presbytery. Some of the Seeeder preachers were loud in their denunciations of the Tirzah dispensary and fought for its removal, I but wo have not heard a word from them about the whiskey drinking that has been going on ] since that establishment was closed. We do not snv anything about %J %J O our church or against these preachers, but they certainly cannot afford to be indifferent under the present circumstances. So far as the law stands, they have | prohibition now, but Solicitor Henry cannot enforce the law tin less he has; the support of the juries of York. There is a solemn responsibility on the preachers of York in this emergency. The result of their labors so I far has been to remove the Tir/ah dispensary and open the way for contraband whiskey brought over the line from the grogshops of , North Carolina. What will they do uhout it? General Hemphill fully understands that in North Carolina the Presbytery is not made a party to the sale of liquor, while in South Carolina it is made a part nor with the dispensary in44deaiing out hellfire by the pint," as Rev. Rod Plvler used to say. We believe the record will show as many convictions in i York as in any other county in the State of persons indicted for selling blind tiger liquor in violation of the dispensary law. ?
