Philadelphia, April 20?The case of Senator M S Quay, charge ed with fraudulently using State money on deposit in the defunct People's Bank, went to the jury this evening, the lawyers having finished their arguments and the Judges charge being delivered. William Jennings Bryan was the central tigurw at a Democratic dinner in one of the Now York hotels last Friday night. Some three thousand persona are said to have been present. Bryan made a speech in which ho upheld the doctrine of free silver?16 to 1 ? i and in the great magnanimity of , his heart said that be was willing ! to allow <lgold Democrats," and r other prodigal Democrats to return to the party in time to vote for him next year?or words to that effect. Mr. Bryan seems to he laboring j under the impression that he is an oracle, the ownor of the Democratic party, or something of the sun,. This editor has not committed the sin of voting for a "gold Democrats," neither has he voluntari ly committed the sin of voting for froe silver and the principles which would disorganize the business interest of this country. As long as this is a free country, and as long as the citizen is allowed freedom of thought and action, we expect to express our convictions and to vote for the 1 nominees of the Demociatic party. When the Democratic party is looking for a candidate we shall % i seek to find one who favrlts 1 honest money, but if the Democratic party chooses to put up a figure-head to be voted for, this editor will vote for him. Mr. Bryan's doctrine can never prevail, and the Democratic party insures its defeat by putting him 1 at the head of the Presidential ticket. Aside "from his free silver heresy, ho would throw awav recent territorial acquisitions.? Abbeville Pi ess and Banner. ? NO MORE VOLUNTEERS/ r .
