THE LEDGEK. Tliuf iow S. Carter, EDITOR AND MANAGER. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 12, 1899. [For The Ledger. VAN WYCK ITEMS. Some of our local weather prophets have found out what is tie trouble with nature in giving in so much cold wet weather. They aay it is caused by having a left handed moon which will continue with us for eijdit months. This kind of a moon occurs every forty years. \\ e do not know if their theory is well founded or authenticated, but we do know il:.. ?i.- c?A. i- L umi mis is inu ursi uiue we nave ever heard of such a moon. If any of your readers are wiser than we on the workings of such a moon, we would he glad to have some information along this line. We ?onfess that if this moon is to continue with us eight months and give us its usual freaks in the weather through the summer, we are at a loss what kind of crops to plant as we have not had any experience in farming in left handed moons or arctic regions. If the fool-killer is out of a job in other portions of the world he can find some good material in this part, not only in left handed moon cranks hut in other things > just as absurd. We may ue a fit subject for his wrath, as we ac knowledge we have played the fool a good many times, hut when we see our folly we haye always been willing to admit of the foolishness, and thereby he a subject for pardon hut some are so far gone, that they are blind in their folly and will die in their foolishness. Rev. R. D. Perry made his last visit as pastor to Six Mile and Beulah churches last Sunday. Lie gave his people some wholesome instructions in well chosen words in their parting as pastor and people. We have often reflected ( in studying the parting words of these messengers of life, and their j efforts in trying to get their peo- < pie aroused in the great, battle of | truth aguinst sin and folly, and 1 we have beon painfully impressed 1 with a want of appreciation by those to whom they so faithfully directed their labors. There was a meeting of those interested in the Epworth League at Vuri Wyck church Sunday night for the purpose of reorganizing. There were short addresses in its interest by Rev. K. E. Mood, Prof. J. VV. Hates and J. M. Yodor. They adjourned to meet on Wednesday evening to perfect the organization and elect a delegate to the State Kpworth meeting at Camden. We hope to see many join the league and make it a success. Mr. G. F. Ferguson and family of Elgin, visited relatives and friends at and near Van Wyck last week. Miss Lilly .Jordan is visiting Mrs. R. H. Massey this week. On last Sunday, Mr. R. II. Riyes visited his sister, Mr*. E. D. Tillman who has been quite sick but is now convalescing. Mrs. R. H. Massey spent part of lust week with her mother near Fort Lawn. Mrs. Lem Hyatt is spending some time with her sister, Mrs. J. A. Hyatt, who has had quite an extended illness. Wo are sorry to hear that Mrs. C. .J. Griffin is qnito ill. Dr. Jas. U. Massey has been visiting friends and relatives and attended Van Wyck church on Sunday. Tne Doctor is looking unusually well and time seems to hang lightly upon him. * v ' OPTTMtr*. - Crawford case Removed. Ponder, porformed a surgical ojjeration on a lady 22 years old of more than usual interest. They removed an ovarian tumor (cyst) weighing 40 pounds, and they say that all symptoms now indicate that the patient will recover. A tumor of such proportions is a very rare affection in a young unmarried woman and ! its removal is a serious and diffi- j cult matter.?Greenville News. This successful remedy is not one of the many internal medicines advertised to do unreasonable things, but a scientifically prepared liniment especially effective in adding strength and elasticity jot to those parts of woman's organism which | bear the severest strains of childbirth. | WO The liniment may be used at any and j i all times during pregnancy up to the ' very hour of confinement. The earlier it >rn i? begun, and the longer used, the more perfect will be the result, but it has been used during the last month only with r? great benefit and success. It not only shortens labor and lessens iti | the paia attending it. but greatly diminishes the danger to life of both mother "1 and child, and leaves the another ia a condition more favorable to speedy recovery. 44 Mother's Friend " is sold by druggists at fi.oo, or sent by express on receipt of price.
