'V ?> W I'p to a very recent period Senator Tillman has been more noted in the senate for unseemly words than w holesome acts, hut ho seems to he changing for tho hotter anil trying to fnltill the congressional duty of making himself generally useful. In proposing yesterday an amendment to tho naval appropriation hill reducing the price of armor plate to $300 a ton he did a notably good thing, and thesuccfc'SK nf hist iiroimsition is crnitit'v ? , , ? ri j j iMg. Tho Tillman and Butler amendments are needed. Millions ^ have practically been donated by tho government to the armor 1 trust. The plants in it have been created and enriched bv governtuent patronage, yet the companies operating them have combined to "hold up" the United States for further enormous and excessive profits. It is time to be free of J them. If they wont permit reiu < sonable competition among them- ' selves and something like fair rates tho government should erect < its own plant.
