News has been so Imdiy frozen up that very little has been pass ing around Van Wvck of inter?st to the leaders of The Ledger. The "temple of .Justice'' for Waxhaw township has been moved to Van Wyek and Magistrate Hyatt has called his court together twice in the last ten days to dispense justice. He presents a dignified appearance upon the bench, being naturally a handsome man?over the average of avoirdupois generullv allotted to men. Ijast Monday our little village had the appearance of a regular court day. As it had been made known that a case was to be tried in which several of our people were interested The nits disposed of in a way that disappointed nearly nil who carno to hear it. It had to be not proved on account of defective paper*. We believe Mr. Hyatt wili make us a good Magistrate and bespeak for him the aid of all la vabiding citizens, and nuru all lawbreakers ? he careful, lest t:ey come under his just judgments M etwrs. Dsn Davis, .1 M Smith and K W Nisbet visited Van Wyck Monday. Mr. Davis was interested in the lawsuit before Magistrate Hyatt's court. Globe Phosphate Mil's Burned. j The State, 2'2d iust. 1 i The mixing establishment of the Globe Fertilizer mill was burned down early this morning. i The bltl7.P wi\si r)i>i(viriiPO(t fou> I minutes after the Charlotte train passed on its way to the shed, ' and the origin is supposed to hare been from a spark. The wooden building burned like tinder, and tlie whole was soon a mass of ' d""1 seething tlames, without any possibility of saving a dollar's worth of the goods on hand, which amounted to almost the total output of a season. |?^ Ihe building was valued at $30,000, with an insurance of T $?? >.000 on that and the chemical | work* nearby. lu the mixing part, which was burned, were 10,000 tons of fer-* j tili/.ers of all grades, valued at $1U5,(>00. This stock was insured in Richmond. The mill is owned by the Yir~ ginia-Carolina Chemical company, headquarters at Richmond. Dr. T. C. Robertson is the manager. 1 There were 14 carson the sidetracks, many of them loaded to be sent out today, and ten of these were totally destroyed by the fire. The adjoining operatives, houses and other departments of the fac- ggg tory were in imminent danger but ij were saved, several streams being thrown upon them, i Parte of the building were three ^ stories high. It was erected in ,,er . ^ f , ban i 181)0 and was entirely of wood, Mt t 1140x300 feet, with a roof partly i of shingle and partly of rubberoid. f y 1^* ^ The chemical works are situated in the other large building and , this did not catch afire. About 100 or more hands were employed in tho mauufacturin" I * ! \ and shipping departments al this * 1 season, and these are thrown out J)er of employment. 'lhe chemical cou works are useless without the mix- "e'( ing department, and tho corpora- *ee tion which owns the factory may H()i see lit to rebuild. i>u? . . null 1 lie lire spread so rapidly that by the time the department urriv- f ed the whole building was lost *obz and the brick engine room had caught.
