VAN WYCK ITEMS. \':m Wvck litis been receiving ' some congratulations from the' 1 less, since .Judge Vtin Wvck has been elected Mayor over Greater , New York. Our little village got >ts name, directly from this distinguished family. General Hoke was president, of theG C & N R R j when our village was located, married a sister of Judge Van I h Wvck and our station was named ) in honor or complimentary for Mrs Hoke's maiden name. We felt a little interest in tho mayors election of New York, and our sympathies were with Van Wvck, as he is a South Carolinian and j our associations with his name i ma le his success doubly interesting! nnd wo felt fully satisfied ut his' grand victory, and believe be will | sustain tin confidence of bis many supporters, witb honor during bis " mavornlty. Our village lias been passing fi through some changes lately. The 'l ' New York Racket" at the railroad crossing has closed its doors by mutual agreement with all con- eerned and the barbel shop has c< moved out in Main street and gives i black eye to high rent. 1 Kt Our mayor and policeman fail todo their duty at times, and our j village is tirned over to the tender mercies of boisterous fun,''' makers. , There i-. some talk of an elec- I ti'in soon, and Mill Dolittle has I already tiled hi> pledge to be gov erned by the majority in the elec-i tion for mayor, but he is a little uneasy, that Old Hickory will get in the lead, as it takes a good deal of his time, fixing to get mar- j i Ti.:.. ...iii 4.1 ? - i i ^ , IV.I. One of them visited 1 Lancaster a few days since and forgot the most important business I to which he was to attend. I Another drove his horse so fast! I that he set his buggy spindles on lire and had to stop for it to cool i otr and be greased These things! will soon l>e of the past and these I candidates settle down to the sober realities of home life. Listen for I the wedding bells. r\TKIM WltLl I Ei V/I IlJltO. The road convention held in Cnlumhiu hist Wednesday was attended by representative men from j almost every county in the State. Gen Rov Stone, V S Road cometi missioner, made a short infornal address which was full of sugges- Hi tions and bore directly on the wl conditions which obtain in this State. A permanent organization ?n was perfected and several resoln- ** tions asking the legislature to pass certain important acts were wi adopted. ^ At a meeting of the committee i on a monument to the Confederate | women of the State, held in Columbia Wednesday, plans, specifi-! ?!i rations, and estimates for a monu ' pr ment to cost not exceeding $10,-1 000., were solicited fiom all work-! .
