To give a letaiied account of what we have wen would he too great an unlertaking?luit upon a whole our journeyings and sojourns have lieen very pleasant and of much interest. We have found it so pleasant in the country encompassed by Lincolnton, Newton, Oonjord and Hickory, that we have not carried out our intentions of going on farther to the land of the skies, embracing ltlowirtg Hock, Linville Falls, Hound Knob Ashville and other interesting points. We lind here some line erops, mil many orchards ladencd with luscious fruits. The many largo -tai ks of straw along our line of travel, indicate that there has been a large crop of grain made in this countrv and you sec on very high- vay numerous wagons ind teams hauling wheat to market which is now bringing one lollar per bushel. Vou can hear he Woodman's ax ringing in the forest, foiling trees, and the keen vhistle of the saw mills as they onvert the logs into lumber ready for market, and see many wagons uoving it to the lumber yards on be railroads ready for* shipping t. The lumber business is one >f the lending industries of this egion and the price of lunds is argely governed by the amount >f its timber. The mountain towns here are rery different from Air South Caolina towns. Their trade lrf argely barter and it is a very no iceable feature in business that /agon load after wagon laad is old or exchanged for goods and 10 money changes hands. Of the towns, we visited, we /ere more favorably impressed zith Hickory than the others, t has a thrifty people who dwell 11 pleasant homes and some of nodern architecture and very astv, numerous churches of he latest designs, some magnilient high school and college buildn?rs of which its citizens are justy proud, a handsome bank buildng and town hall and one of the test Inns in the up country. It ias many industrious establishnents thai add much to its annual usiness. Among these you rind ts tobacco ware house, construeion companies, lumber yards and lickory's pride, "The Piedmont Vagon Works." A friend carried ue through the works and showed no the improved machinery, heinning with the machines that iand1ed tho wood in the rough nd following it up until ezeryliing aliout the wagon was com* ilcte and ready for tho painter, n the painting rooms you lind a ozen skilled workmen putting he finishing touch on "The Piodlont Vehicles." Tho capacity of his plant is sixteen wagons per ay, ninoii arc noing sold every ay in as manv states. Any one /ho has never visited a plant of his kind will find in it, an eve penor. and a tiling that will well ppay the visit. While in Hick- j ry wo had the pleasure of dining i rith our friend, A W t'lmnce, ) /ho is doing a sueeossful eon fee-* ionery business and was glad to ear something from l^aneuster. Colombia, SC., Aug 2*.?Co lumbar was threatened with i second Darlington war affair toda\ and nothing but the prudence o: i the police and dispensary officer! ; avoided a most serious conflict. It seems that since the origina package houses opened their door here, the dispensary officials am ! the attorney general have beet lay ingvt raps for the agents. S< far they have steered clear of then 1 but yesterday two boys visitct Doth of \V 11 Mect/.e's establish ments and the eldest upon enquiry representing himself as 4'twenty one and past," bought half a pint o whiskey. This boy, whose nam* is Fuller, then went to the attor ney general's office and made a Hi 'davit that he ia minor, only It years of agoi had bought liquoi from Motze. Mr Moetzo heari of this and anticipating trouble, had a warrant issued last nigh' and caught the boys arrest foi perjury, bringing forward wit nesscs to prove that he had toh him that he was 21 years of age, This morning the constable pro ceedtng in accordance with the pint went before a magistrate urid gol out warrants against Meetzo foi | selling liquor to minors. Arme< I with these, they went to Meetzet Market street establishment to ar: rest him. He was prepared foi them and ordered them away. ! He is known to be a determined man and they promptly retreated to secure the assistance of the police and magistrate's constables. When these appeared upon ths scene, Meetze warned the constables on their peril not to cross the door sill. They accordingly hung back, but after considerable parleying .Meetze finally told the policemen anil magistrate's constables that he had sent arms away and thjd they could come and take hiin by physical forcr, if they wanted to. They then accordingly entered and a struggle ensued, Meetze deI termined to force them to eject him by force, resisted like a lion and it was sometime before they j succeeded in forcing him out and ; not then without some bloodshed, one man hnving his hen 1 cut open with a billy which a policeman had dropped. The establishment was then turned over to the liquor J constables, who closed it, anil i Meetze was taken liefore a magistrate, giving bond for his appearance to answer to the charge against him. He then went to his Main street I establishment. Here a few minu tes later tne constables appeared to close the place. Meetze, in the meantime, had determined not to submit longer, and boldly de fied them, threatening to kill thr lirst man that attempted to enter. Things grew interesting, squally in fact. Alarm was on the faces of constable, tipstaffs, etc., gathered around the door, me -eng ws were sent, to the governor for advice. J lis orders were to close the place but Mejr.zc was like the rock of Gibraltar. Squarely in front ol the open door, he >romiaed death to the first man .n:it attempted to enter. The siege lasted foi hours, everyone expecting tb? clash to come irt any minute, but no efforts were made to enter and when the hour for closing (f o'clock) came the besieged quietly closed his doors and went ho in d This is not Meetzc's first stum off.
