Thurlow 8. Oar tor, EDITOR AND MANAGER. III II I I ' ' WEDNBBDAY, AUGUST 20, 1800. ... -U .. _JX- - ' FALL IN! j #The August Convention ha* met and adjourned. It Jransacted the business it was called to transact and more besides. It may or may uot have exceeded its con stitutional powers. Certainly it was impolitic at this juncture to go as far aa it did. But, lot that be aa it may, an overwhelming majority of the wbito people of the State sanction the actiou taken by it, and it is the duty of the minority to quietly submit Wo have been as much opposed to i \\?k - r miv ouiuiAduii ui uapt. Tillman for Governor as almost anyone but it is now too apparent that be is the choice of the Democratic party to longer endeavor to defeat liinr by fair means. Wo sympathize with no measure which threatens a split in the ranks of the whites. It is time to beat the -aasemblj.? Let every democrat who believes in white supremacy fall into line. . We can have but two parties in 1^ his State?the white man's or ^etnocyjjitc jjarty, mid the negro trt. Republican party. If there's a split among the whites of the State don't let it be ?aid that any white man in Lancaster county joined in it Ij?t us take our place in ranks and march side by ide as we have always done. It ' is the duty of every man to stand by the democratic party as now organized. The Greenville Neiv* expresses our seutioients in an ! editorial which we publish elsewhere in this issue : "Down with bolters, kickers and splitters of high and low degreo, wherever they hail from and whoever they are." He would therefore name the Hon. G. Lamh Hoist, ol Charleston, as temporary chairman of the convention. This brought on the fight and Or. Sampson Pope nomuated W. J. Talbeert for temporary chairman. Chairman Hoyt tl>ea explained that it ha^l been customary fir thf Executive Committee to name the vteinpornry chairman. 1 )r.
