m Address of Rev. Dr. Baclimnn, Before the Ladies' Association to Com memoratc the Confederate Dead. The Uev. I)r. B ?climin *1 * liv?r*?<l the following beautiful address tliu oilier e*en. ing before the above Association, at the Mills House, Charleston, S C. Ladies : I feel vory highly honored lor your too favorable opinion in selection tue to preside over a meeting called by your selves, for w Licit you deserve all die credit, as yeu will Lava all tLe labor and expense. When our brave defenders were lying in our hospitals si^k, wounded, and dying, I remember that many of tou were there num ng the afdeted, writing letters for them to llicir ahsent fr ?mmN, brought to tliem nourishing food and ' cordials; when they died you wro'e let ters of condolence to the mourning re'* lives. During that disastrous war I visit) ed nearly all of the Confederate State*, from Mississippi and Arkansas to Maty land, and from the seab >ard to the moon tains, and I loiind woman every where the same; full of patriotism, sympathy, ami untiring drvolion to our brave soldier*; urging their sous ami brothers onward to the battle field; striving to provide elotbi ing for them -whilst in the camp, ami wotkmg with their needles to support the families of the absent soldiers. The war has now ended ; hut whatever may have been tbe result of the war, we still owe a debt of gratitude to our brave defender* ; whatever may have been the conduct of the ftelii-h and unpaltiotic, our soldiers * ? and our ladies performed their duty.? And now those who mourned over the % aoldieia when they died, are meeting to gather in every portion of our land to elrew wreaths over their grave*, and bedeck their tombs with laurel*. 1 have read with pride and with pleasure t i# account of the demonstrations of the , adies of Virginia, in memory of Stone all Jackson, and all our great bal'le fields are beginning to be converted into ceme lerie*, where the traveler may atray and iudulge in contemplation. In hiurooe you everywhere meet with these meuiori als to the patriotic dead. In England, the great chief* have found a resting place ,, in WeetaiinMer Abbey. In France, Fere le Chame, one of the moat pictures! que, romantic, and inviting slops on earth, is daily visited by the thousands; whole village* in ike suburbs of l'aris obtain a livelihood by manufacturing wreathe* to Lane on the monuments and spread over lha graves of tbe departed and beloved friends. The churches of Germany are bung round with tablets tvilh the names of those who died for their King and Fatherland. It may, jter/n^u, be questioned by some, whether these demon*!ration* are altogether proper, since force of circumstances have compelled us to return to tflfc Union, and those who laid down their lives in defence of their righ's and liberties are stigmatized as rebels ? To this I would answer, we contented for great principle?the right of self gov eminent ; a principle for which our fatli. ers fought and bled. Washington whs proclaimed an outlaw anj a re'-el? he was successful, and then whs hailed as the Father of bis Country. Want of success is da evidence of wrong ; the Corlatiai. religion was opposed hy the heathen and tbe J aw, and its blasted author was e--n> detnned and crucified?it cau-ed rivers of blood to flow ; it was not esi?bii?hwd (or ages afterward. The 1'rolea'ani Re for nation in Germany nrodured il<? il.-.t. J , ?
