VIRGINIA CORRESPONDENCE. Richmond, Va , July 20 I My Dkak Friends:?"i could write von at I great length, but must aim to be biief. I ' reached Goldnboro' N. on Thtimdnv at I 6 |i in. At tun o\ lock that night four com- | panics of our Regiment panned up. An j neither of the Colonels, staff nor "the Greys" were aboard, Corporal Stevens and myself took beds, and slept well until n oruing. About I) a ill., on yesterday (Friday) Col. Ulanding and the re>l of our Regi uient arrived. My heart felt the welcome that I gave to our many friends, ai d we all set out together lor Weldon, in two trains. I met with a very cordial welcome from Col. Blacding and his staff, and nl one glance discovered that I was to be a com painon ot getUletnen, with whom I would be proud to appear on uny stage ot' action. Immediately 1 wan at home, it friend to the whole parly. We made our way along very slowly? I wan in the advance (mail; train, and reached Petersburg at 7 o'clock last night?slept well again. Col. Kuv, Major tSteadman and "Long Crabs" were along. W? left Petersburg this morning at5o'clock. Mr. Wilherspoon,4 rhe Greys" and Col. Ray, left ua and joined them in Petersburg, and will all arrive in Richmond by 12 to day, nothing preventing We brought on our train a number of Congrenamen. Hon Abraham Venable, of N. C., who closed the eyes of John C. Calhoun, wan one. lie is one of the greatest talkers of the century and entertained u* highly. He has been of the Calhoun school for 15 years?fought for his principles in North Carolina and lived to be a member of the Convention which seceded unanimously within 20 minutes nfler it organized ; and then saw a bust of Mr. Culhouu presented to the Convention ; was appointed by the Convention to receive it, made a speech to ' it, and saw it preside over the remaining ' deliberations of the body?glwy enough for one man, and a noble man lie is, (he . was born and brought up in Virginia) ? Hon. Howell Cobb was also on board ? ' The Klephar.t," however, was u brother of ' Mrs. Lincoln, who commanded a squad of regulars, which had been sent to Knleigh ' with some 30 odd prisoners. He is rather a hard looking case?likes his notoriety, I 1 think, and is very uearly what I heard him ' tell somebody lie was, "one of the blue hens ' chickens." 1 We uiet with kindness all along the road. I 1 buckets of water were sent to the train? 1 in souie place*, buttermilk, bread and meat. ' &c., and any uumber of handkerchiefs were waved by the fair Hex?not a few by the negro*. But our noble fellowH hud a lmrd time of it?they have been ou the road three duys and nights?ninny of them ou open flat*, one hour under a broiling aim and the uext under a terrible hard rain. At night many of them just rolled up in their blan kels, stretched out und took it. Tney are the men who deserve the glory in Dim mat ter. Let them have it and may the God of mere)* blent them and protect them. A Col. Winder (as 1 hear.) has been up. pointed *>y the President, for Col. Kion's Regiuiuut. They arrived yesterday, having lost one man Weener, ?>f Chester, who went to sleep, feel out of the cars and was terri bly mangled. One in our Regiment was badly wounded, perhaps killed, much in the same way, near Wilmington. And now 1 um again upon the soil of rny dear Old Virginia. Tlie first man 1 met was Capt. Hull, from Highland County, one 1 of natures noblest noblemen whom I have 1 loved like ? brother from my boyhood.? He lives within 30 feel of the nniin turnpike leading from Staunton to the Northwest, 36 miles from Staunton and within 45 miles of Gen McCielian's present hend quuriers. He is a HMD of mind, piety, bravery and property. He and his company sprang to artns immediately after the war proclama tiou, and the first time his Regiment (or its companies) was formed, auk for the march to Phillippi. Capt. Hull suys that wu en i do nothing ill the mountains until we ha"e 30 or 30, j 000 men. Speaking of the hnltle at Stone Bridge, u correspondent gives the following account of the part which the 2d and 8th South Carolina Regiments ((h)ls Kershaw nnd Cash) and Kemper's Battery bore in the battle : Suddenly an order comes, borne, 1 believe, by Gen. It was uiel along the way bv numbers of the w ounded, dying and retiring, who declared that the dav bad gone against oh ; that Sloan's Regiment, the 4th, was cut to pieces ; that Hampton's Legion coming to the rescue, and the Louisiana Battalion, were annihilated ; that tien. Bee and Co I. Hampton were mortally wounJed, and Col. Beit Johnson kiiled ; and that the Confederate forces were out fl inked and routed, and the day lost. This was the unvarying tenor of the words that greeted os from the wounded and dving and the fugitives who met us during the las', mile of our approach to the field of battle. To the sharp cry of the 2d Regiment "On, men on ! these fellows are whipped, and think that every body else i?," the troops responded iiobl.v, and closing up thi-T columns 'inoched rapidly and boldly forward The fast living cannon shot now cut dow n several of our number before we col -?ighl of the foe.
