The frequent stirrit g of soils between the rows, is undoubtedly a piotection, and in ordinary cases, a suilicienl protection against dtoulh. The air passes freely tiirough soils frequently stirred : and when ever air comes in contact with a body, colder than itself, it deposits moisture, as in a tumbler tilled (with ice water at the uiuner lauie, or in the pailicles of a soil at sotue inches depth, and consequently colder tlian the air above the surface.? When the fanner sees his tumbler sweat, as it is sometimes expressed, he may be assured, llialeo it fares with the soil six or eight inches below a well stirred surface, provided the soil were mellowed to that or u greater depth before the crop was put in. Mulching is often an eOicient protection against drouth. Straw, coarse hay, Jeaves, mold from the woods, chips, or .oveu a pile of stones, laid around the roots of a newly set tiee, retards evaporation, and secures a uioist condition for the roots. It is so with strawberries if the ground is mulched between the rows.? jl aspberries, blackberries, goose berries, and many other crops may be partially protected in the saine way. But the great source of protection in our country is deep plowing. On a soil of any dec?nt consistency, it would be im possible that a crop should suffer from tbe .drouth, if the soil were pulverized to a depth of fifteen inches, because the lower portions of such a soil would retain moisture till long after the surface should havo received new supplies from the cloud. our readers are alarmed at fifteen inch ,es as a depth which they despair of reaching, we think them too easily alarmed, hut still we will meet them on higher ground. A field thoroughly pulverized to the depth of ten inches, will seldom suffer from ihe drouth. Abundant and reliable -testimonies have been published going to jdiow that fields [-lowed to a depth of eight or ten inches have escaped unhurt, when other fields, equally well cultivated, with the single exception that they were .plowed but half as deep, have utterly failed of giving crops. That deep plowing as a sufficient remedy against any ordin.i ry drouth?any hut the very longest and severest?is an established truth.?Ed. Plow Loom and Anvil. .1 RAISING DOMESTIC TURKEYS. A writer in one of our Agricultural .Journals says : It is iny opinion that farmers can raise a pound of fowl easier and cheaper than a pound of pork, heretofore I liave been unfortunate in raising turkeys, but (Lis season I adopted a different mode?a plan of my own inveu tioo?by winch j hav.o been very successful. Otbers may have adopted the same course, but not to my knowledge. \ ourtg turkeys ore apt to die before itltey attain tluo age ol three weeks. I came to the conclusion that tbe fatality among them was caused by vermin, heavy faeed, and cold, damp weather. My methsMlHrlds season has been litis*. Take Ji|n eggs cftbo first laying and set under jR^yOar Iveuij the second laying let the tiairvjfi hatch, 'ffwo or tlirce dayshbfore ^alWoig7 spriak^p the nest and fowl* 1 | themselves with a little lino sulphur.? 1 When thu young were hatched, I took ! a little sulphur, gunpowder, and lard mix ed, and greased their heads and necks to keep uff the vermin while the young hrooded. In eight or ten days repeat the dose and put on another coat. Mode ok Fekdim;.?J took equal quantities of wheat bran, and Indian meal, and wot w ith sour or clabbered milk, w ith a good lot of tine-cut schives once in two or three days in with it,and fed them till a month or six weeks old ; then lessened the bran. Feed them early in the morning to keep them from rambling in the wet grass or dew. Such has been my method of feedinir a h d management, and 1 have lost only two out of :turly hatched. Ducks managed in the same way?lost three by accidental causes out of thirty five hatched, j One, only, died while young. Chickens, in like manner, with greased heads and sulphured nests?lost three in about sixty. This is my mode and my success. Lime?To receive the greatest benefit j from lime, it must be kept as near the surface as possible. The reason is this: Its weight and minuteness give it a tendency to sink ; and after a few years of cultivation, a large portion of it will be I loutid to have gone the depth of its most j efficient action, llence il is advisable to j spread it on the ground after plowing; tinm harrow it well in, and allow it to remain i;i grass as long as good crops can be had. When lite lime is settled down oeyond the reach of the common plow, the subsoil plow will prolong its tiled, by enabling the atmosphere and the roots of plants to nencttale the subsoil like. ! V (SC. A VIRGINIAN IN NEW YORK. Some time since Mr. M., of Virginia, a gentleman of rare intellectual endowments, as well as of superior physical j strength, was in this city, Passing up Broadway one afternoon, lie stepped into an auction loom and bid oft' one or two articles..when he was asked to walk into a back office. in a few minutes a bill was presented to him for $80. Mr. M. . examined the suddenly increased bill, and then, in a manner decidedly cool, arose and said, "Ah, yes, I thought when I caino in, this was a regular and respectable auction house, but I was mistaken, and I lind it is one of the regular'mock-auction swindling concerns." 'This,'said ore of the attendants,'is a respectable auction house. ami," turning the key in the doors, "we w ill let you know, sir, that we are no swindlers, and tliat you must pay litis lull." "Now," said Mr. M., "you are fixing tilings right, and I understand mat ters, and we will see who will open the door first." At this he drew his arm back and before ihe/'mock auctioneerer" could "take a note of time" ho found himself heaped up on the floor, and his compan ion in rascality knocked into the outer room, through the door, to the no small astonishment of outsiders. Mr. M., de libeiately left the room, and heard no more of the hill of *80, as the swindlers found (hey had locked up the wrong customer.
