| Mr th* lsfitgrr. J Mr. Kuitok : Ah you li*ve requested! i|, ! I will now give, briefly, ray views on' the ; propriety o|* South Carolina sending delegates to tin*'Ucnioerstii' Nutiouitl Convention to be hold at ('iiiiMiihattiJ ! t An Hort wan made, during the Lie wesson of the Legislature, to up a meeting lo take that matter into consideration, but if, WaH unsuccessful. 'A day or twoUoforu the adjournment, I tmdei'stbod that u paper had been aigned by about fifty niemUerH, wliieh has ainee been published, recommending the j?i ]>le of the several DUttiyt* to meet at their respective Court Houses, on Saledny ill March, and appoint delegates to mcart in Columbia on tlifc fust Monday in May, for tile purpose of apppjuting delegates to represent the State in the ?iouinnnili Couvculion. That paper I did uot see, but i suppose the reason was, that 1 had expressed uiy""11 \o a Senator who did sign it,and w ho tu^joaUd my views on the matter, as opposed to the measure. Since then, I hsvo read a good deal that baa been urged in Us favor, but I have seen ?lo anlReWut reason to induce a change in tny opinien. But, on the contrary, the more | have reflected on it, the more thoioughlv km I convinced that the no lie v y#rsued by the State, iu Levying out of all 4 presidential scrambles, i? correct. I not. opposed to tho convention or c?wu< system j On principle. It supersedes the mode pointed out in the Constitution, (? bicli I prefer,) j | (or the election of a President and Vice- ' President. It U uuCiUU constituted, w irte- . sponsible, and is controlled by alvtv ?k*ewd I und designing nun, who arc looking more < fo their own selfish ends and personal ag- ' jjrandiscmvnt, thuu to wbolcscnie principles and the rights of tho different sections of the couutry. Now, what nre tlie arguments in ' favor of thu State's charging her policy ami 1 going into this Convention ? So far as 1 j j ran understand them, they are three. The j first is, that all the other States will do so,' and we might us well do likewise. The j amount of the argument is this, that if olh- I ers do wrong, w e must do so too. I pass it by without further comment. Another argument, and one they seem to think is a crusher, is, that this Convention is to meet and lay down a pint fort" of principle*, which will secure us all our constitutions! rights. The great <jucstion now at issue, and paramount to all others, is the question of slavery. The anti-slavery sentiment predominates now,in the popular branch of the Government, and in fact, in all the Northern Sutc*. und is still increasing every Jay. The idea, then, of go- | | inj^ Into that Convention, a majority of ~i whoN inemlvn will be from that auction, ' with the expectation of making a platform ' that will secure our coiiatitutionnl rights on 1 this question, is to my mind, the moat propostvroua idea that ever entered the brain of a sane uian. If platforms would secure our rights, we ( ought to have had them long ago, for we have hud platform after platform, but unfortunately for us, wo never hear any thing ' more of t iem, after they accomplish the ' purpose for wliich they were intended, to] * wit: 'I hat of lunking s President and divid- 1 ? ing ll.e loaves and tisliea. For iSf part, 1 | wont no more platforms, made by irresponsible party conventions. We havo a platform | already nnido?thu Constitution?ill 'which , pur rights nre guaranteed. Iwt tia stand on ( that and not beg for our rights, but demand nod exact them. If we canoot get them in this way, it is worse than folly to expect to slo so in caU'Miaes and conventions, in which ' we are in thu minority. The third argument 1 ; it, that wo ought to bo rip resented in that 1 Convention, in order to secure the nomina- ' tioti of President Pivrco. 1 havo no iden ' ( that Preahh'iil t'i?.r..?. ?,.n ?-l i (i? I tioo in that Convention. The feet, that he | liia done justice to, and is popular in, the i j South, is the very reason *'Ujr he c.nnm.t gut , it. 1 contend, t,hnt \vc %(U exorcise n great, yr infUicnvc W a?v^r?ug Li* noaiinatiou, by 94>t being, than if we - etc represented in the Convention. I aui willing, however, that the different Districts should send delegates ' \o Columbia, for the c.xpiea* purpose, and none other, of annotinciug Franklin I'iercc as the nominee of this State, for rt*eIection. To the pros* nt system of President mak. ? ing, by conventions and caucuses, may be ( attributed, more tlian all othi r rauacs put together. th?condition of thy South at this time. If all the other Southern States had j j followed our exaii.pje tn this rcapcct, we | Would have Iteeii united, and had all our rights iu Uie Union, or our independence out Vfit.
