Senator Butlsr.?It is reported by a correspondent of tho Newberry Sentinel, that at a late dinner to Senator Butler, at Mt. Ennon, attended also by tbe ladies j after tbe speech tbe Senator selected a fail partner and joined the cotillion. The report says that this senatorial dance was no common achievement, and as it progressed in its requirements called into play the powers of the performers, it was plain to see that old Edgefield bad, in her honored son one v. ho was not to be distanced by Young America, and when tbe race was done, the gallant judge, liko a knight of old, sealed the transaction in complimentary style, by impressing a genuine old fashioned kiss upon the glowing cheeks of I.is fair partner. The fiddler called upon the shale of ''Old Solomon," dropped his bow without giving the usual "rattles', for the dimes, and declared that he could nerer think of tx>ing paid when he had a senator to dance to his music. -?South Carolinian, The proprietors of the Enquirer, Times, Commercial and Columbian, four daily journals ol Cincinnati?have combined to raise tho price of their papers from ten to twelve cents per week. They allege as reasons for the change the fact that newspaner Dliblishinc is less nrofitahle than l o ? i any other business requiring a similar out lay of capital, talent and lal>or, the increase in the coat of making new paper* owing to competition, the rise in paper, wages, rents, fuel and prolusions. His Excellency GovcrnorKfANNiNO ha> appointed Robbht A. Thompson Coromis sioner in Equity for Pickens district in place of Joseph W. Rosa, deceased. Dav-dson Collkob, N. C.? The Heai.tii of our Dmtrict.?We were rather premature some weeks sinpe, in congratulating our citizens upon the health of our town nnd district. At this time we regret to say it is quite sickly. There iscarcely a family in town but in which there is a ease of fever. " \s yet, wo are glad to say in no case has it proved fatal, although we are told that in the district, especially in tho neighborhoed of Flat Creek, there have been a number of deaths. The weather at present is quite cool, that we look for frost nt an early day. t3T Our friend J. W. at llenlev's Store, Oh., is mistaken in regard to the price of our paper. See terms above.? We credit you for nine month? for the $1.60. Death of a Sheriff.?From a verbal source we learn that the Sheriff of York district lied on Friday last. Th<*e who may feel an interest in the esiablishment of a Girl's school, or female Academy in tbe village, are notified that a meeting for the purpose, will be held in the Presbyterian Church hi early candle lighten Fridav evening next. Homicide in Camden.? We have been ioiu 11181 a muruer was committed iu famden on Friday last. As related to us, it appears tluit a citizen of Camden (Lee Dixon) was cr?a ing a disturbance, whilst uuder the influence of liquor, and when commanded by a member ef the guard (Graham) to desist, he shot at the latter, but with no effect. Graham who was on horse-back, alighted at once, when Dixon ran up to him and inflicted a fatal wound on liia person with a bowie knife, from which he died almost instantly. Yellow Fkvkr.?On Thursday last there were 14 deaths in Charleston from yellow fever. On Friday 6. In Savannah it still rages with unabated fury.? Among the victims, we notice the name of lion. Joseph W. Jackson. Col. Jackson was but a short time since a representative in Congress frou that section of tieorgia. Oar Town. More thnn once have wo spoken of (he Improvements going on in our town of faineester. We doubt very much if any of onr Rail Roil towns have made such rapid strides in the improvement of old building*, and in the erection of new ones. Never have we seen sech e wholesome change in any piece, as we here observed in Lancaster since we took up out abode here. From sun-rise until sun-set the hammer end saw are beard in various perls, doing their legitimate work tupfc* *? eeot-f, 0* mrthsnte* It I < x" 0 speaks well tor the enterprise of our citizens Nor is this all. Our energetic Indeed.mt |, Mr. Belden, has taken the work of the streets ^ literally in his own hands, and a marked improverucnt in our public thoroughfares is the consequence. I ancaster is a pleasant place, the citizens generally are kind and neighborly, and with 1,1 but one exception, no one could advance an ^ objection to u residence here. We have re- t* erence to the difficulty ef gotiing from the ol place, and coming back. It is n day's hard ride to any point which intersects a rail road. | This is a source of great inconvenience, ex- ^ | pense and fatigue, and at the same time oej elisions considerable trouble and expense in procuring articles from other places. ,r Riding along the Camden and Lancaster U ! road the other day, we thought seriously of tj j these matters, and caine to the conclusion, c, i that us the Spartan Rand h id dispersed, and j there was but liitlu probibility of our having a rail road, probably the best plan would tt be for us to build a Flank Road from here r, ! to Camden. At this time it couid be laid ^ j with but little expense . there are saw-uiills ^ along the road and plenty of pine trees, that if the people of 'aiiiden and Lancaster unite j to build the road, it could be done cheaply ' I and expeditiously. " What says our contemporary of the Cam t< tLn Journal. ? * The Election. 0 Before we print another paper, the result of the election will be known. We have .! ,, two candidates for Congress ; uz the present incumbent, Gen. McQ, leen, tind Coi. ]. j D. Wilson. Either of these gentlemen we ^ I believe well qualified to represent the first congressional district in the National Coun- ll eils. For State Senator, to fill the unux- * I pired term of the late Col. iluey, we have w | two candidates; viz. the Hon. Dixon U.irn es n | and Dr. L Z. Williamson, lioth of these v I gentlemen are well known to us. and we eon- t tidently assert, either would do credit to the f district. It is for our people to say which c is the best qualified. w For the House of Representatives, we have four candidates; viz. 1*. T. Hammond, n Dr. W. C. Caulhen, S. B. Masscy nnd W. A. Moore. Lancaster sends only two, so two will be left at homo. These four gen- a lemon are ou friends, we entertain a high ll regard lor each and all of them, nnd we be* '' lieve each is ~rell qualified to discharge the ' duties of a Legislator. Messrs. Hammond, P Cauthen and M.is soy hive before represented our district in the Legislature, and we ^ are yet to hear that either caused diss.itisfae- J' tion; Mr. Moore too we have no hesitation in saying would give general satisfaction.? " Our candidates are all in favor of giving the * election of electors of President and Vice r President of the United States to the people, V and opposed to a Prohibitory Liquor Law. We have a word or two to say to voters. In the first place, vote the whole ticket; that is, for member to Congress, State Senator, nnd Representatives. In the next place, do ^ not sutfer yourself to be actuated by per- j sonal regard. Vote for Ihote you Mim best qualified lo srrite you. If you are at enmity f with A, and on terms of inliin.iev with B, yet, if in your opinion A is the best quulitied ^ to represent jour district, divest yourself of all prejudices, and vote for him. As certain as the sun shines, we would. A shake of . the hand, accompanied by an udulatory -soft talk" never did, and never will get our vote. Hypocrisy is to be condemned under any and all circumstance*. Monday to the polls and elect those who ^ will serve you faithfully. The present in- ^ euinbent, James II, Witherspooti Esq., und ^ Col.
