POETRY. For the Lancaster Ledger, SOLITUDE. Ah! solitude, altbo' thou hast a gloom, Which seems to cloud and mark our doom, And many thinking thin, do pine away Beneath thy Taint and glimmering ray, Tet still thou nrt an ark of life Wherein to hide its wars, its strife, Confess in prayer our guilt?to sigh Before an Omnipresent eye. I love thee silent solitude, Where baneful sin cannot intrude; But where inv thoughts can freely soar, In silence, to that happy shore Where all our choicest treasures are, No moth or rust corrupt or mar; O, let me strive to enter there, Where sorrow dwells not, nor despair. F. P. MISCELMANEOUS. Mystkkies ok tub Ocean.?A f?o lays ago a paper, containing llie result of various obsei valioiift made in the coas survey by A. D. Biehe, was read befor die Scientific Association at Washigtoi Among other interesting passages, was on relating to the shape of the floor or bottoi of the ocean, showing that some extraord narv depressions exist along our on coast. '"For instance, on the seaward tin abreast of Charleston, from the shore t sixty miles out, tlie depth increases pre ty gradually, till at that distance it h: acquired a depth of one hundred fathom Hut it soon deepens with great rapidii -as if on the side of a mountain until i about eighty miles out, the ocean bottoi is more than six hundred and fifty falhon from the surface. This continues forwai less than ten miles, when the depth i suddenly decreases to not more, than thrc hundred and fifty fathoms, which so got on only a few miles, when it again deeper to about five hundred fathoms, with sul sequent fluctuations. There is therefore submerged mountain peak or ridge bi tween these points, of a truly remarkab character. The differences in the ten oeratnre of the water vary almost precist ty according to the chance of contour < the bottom, showing that the temporalut at geat depths is yiueh modified hv tl propinquity of the ocean's he.'!. It : ] pears that the gulf stream, whilst ccrtnii ly not superficial, does not run to the ho torn, for off CapoJ-'lorida, Ht twelve hum! red fathoms, the water in summer is of temperature of 30 Fahren licit, a degre below the average winter teinpeatur mueh further north." Sckne on Tub Ouio.?Our boat stoj ped to take in wood. Ou the slrorc a inong a crowd, was a remarkable stupi fellow, with his hands in his pockets am his under lip hanging down. The young ladies in Vermont, it is said though we don't believe it, still continue t kiss the lips of young temperance men, t ?ee whether they have been tamperin: with toddy.
