We are willing to accord to Judge O'Neal, all the credit that he deserves, and it is much for building the Columbia and Greenville Rail Road, and we are ready to praise him for other traits of character. But never can we permit ourselves to say that "as a Judge he has no superior." We have objected and still object in strong terms, to Judges being made Governors nnd {Senators, particularly since the present or l-.J:-! Bench such an overwhelming power and influence, that scarcely any other person need oupose a Judge for nny oflico that he may desire. These Jurisdictions as wc before said, must be divided in order to weaken their overwhelming ntluenoe, or an amendment should be engrailed upon the Constitution requiring that a Judge shall have resigned his office at least two years, to make him elligible to a political station. We agree In the main, with the Patriot, that "whilst we can find a safer and better United States Senator on the Bench than elsewhere, we see no impropriety in going to the Bench for him." But are all of our "safer and better United States Senators" always bo selected from tho ten Judges, than from among all the Statesmen of South Carolina, w ho have mnde polities their exclutivf study ? Shall the Judicial office be prostituted into an electioneering Kme, at which ten men will play for the notorial robes or the Gubernatorial Cnp ? 'In conclusion, it may be proper to say that Col.
