Mr. Editors?I assure yon, sir, it nffords me not *?rrttight?8t gratification to be coin^Dollod thus to obtrude myself upon the nor ,:^ce of my fellow citizens. I plead in extenuation, the peculiar circumstances by which I have boon surrounded. for the past fix tnonlhs,\n connection with the fact that there ?uo resting upon mo obligations, which, if my life be spared, must and shall be discharged, be the consequences as they may. In justification of the present intrusion, I offer the following facts : For some time divers rumors hare reached my car, as being circulated, (doubtless by design) in deficient portions of tho District which are calculated in their nature to injure, if not defeat my success in the practice of a profession, upon which alone I nm dependent for tho daily sustenance of myself and family. Among other less important reports, I have heard that it is said, that I have never practiced medicine before, and that I am now entering upon it's responsible duties for the first lime. Having practiced sorno two years in the Parish of St. James and some four years in Clarendon in conjunction with Doctor. John L Folder, (nowresiding in Georgia) a physicinn long and favorably known to the medical Faculty of I Charleston, and for near thirty years justly esteemed throughout Sumter District us one of tho ablest ond most eminent medical j men in the Southern States; I addressed to that gentleman n letter, requesting him to state explicitly whether or no I hud ever been engaged in the practice of medicine, ' and if over in connection with himself. In answ er to which I received a communi:ation a fewdayn since enclosing tho following I statement, which he authorizes me to use as to mo "seemcth best" and for giving pub- I Itciiy to which 1 know* 1 shall be pardoned by the most fastidious, in consideration of the peculiar circumstances aboce alluded to. "I hereby certify that I)r. Joseph Gallu- I chat was for a cot sideiable tin e a private pupil of Pri feasor Vai.f.htikk Mott of the ' university of Now York?graduated (Doctor in medicine) at one of our inoHt respectable medical Colleges?practiced medicine some ' one or two yonrs in the lower part of South Carolina, and several years with me in Clar. I eidoa County, Sumter District, I regard him as amply qualified to discharge the du- I ties of his profession with credit to himself . and bcnelit to those to whom lie may le 1 called to administer. "Perry Houston Co., Ga. Jan. 18th 1853. 1 (Signed) JOHN L. FELDER, M. D. I I have also received the following from Richard Ragin Esq., one of the largest slaveholders in Sumter Dictrict. "Clnrendon, Sumter, Feb. 7th 1853. 1 "This will certify that Dr. Joseph Galltichat, practiced medicine in this immediate ! neighborhood in connection with Dr. John I* Folder three or four years, I am not certain which ; and practiced on my plantatiod with success. lie was universally and highly esteemed as a skilful Physician and could have enjoyed a fine practice had he remainen mong us?and would receive the same now if lie should sec tit to return. (Signed) R. RAGIN." I trust 1 shall not render myself obnoa. ions to the charge of a violation of professional propriety or dignity, if I add, that the ri.-itror.age of my friends and the public will be-.thankfully received and cordially appre oi.ttcd.
