AUgS. ' ? ] Mr. J. W. Hendricks of Tennessee, paid j our town n visit tho other day, with a drove ! of )lOgS. We are told that the drove comprised n ? to ?hoico lot, and nbout one hundred were l?onght here nt $(>.25 per hundred. There seems to bo a growing disposition on the , part of drovers to itnprovo their stock, and I Mr. Head tick's are said to bo a wry superi- i or lot. I-tr We insert a portion of the article ] sent us by our fair contributor, headed: M leaflets from Memory." 'Hie remainder will appear in our next paper. We do not ' wish to discourage the writer, but we must say, she must exercise more care in her composition. The merit of the article does not insure it a place in our paper, but we are desirous of encouraging young writers. We ] will bo pleased to hear from our fair friend ] again, but of course will exercise our disere- ' tion whether we publish the article or not. We do not commend one for immitation, when you wr'te be original in your composition. A max tli.it can render a reason, is a man worthy of an answer f < But lio that nrjfui'tli for victory, deserveth not the tenderness of truth. Tupper. The Camden Journal of the 23th ult, contains a long article in reply to our Editorial, which appeared some two numbers liack : in the ledger, in whieli we regretted that | Camden, from all appearances, was on the decline. Tho Editor of the Journal, in a spirit which is not natural to him, comes out witli < a long tirade, which in substance amounts to i nothing. i It may be recollected, that in the cditori- 1 al we ullude to, mention was in.-ide of a sale ; 1 of real estate which took place in Camden, :flotne little tin e laick, and which was at a much lower rate, wo thought, than it would hring in Isioeastor. We very reasonnl ly concluded from this fact that Camden was | * going down," to say nothing of what we i have heard ; and predicated onr opinion, also, on tho fact of so few wagons passing through I ^monster to Camden. This was the basis of our argument and this tho Journal docs not deny. Tho Editor questions the truth of what we say, hut does not ns:sert to the contrary. This is strange. Wc never have, by thought word or deed "tried to injure Camden, and can assure our I (friends in that town, that we would be rejjoieed to see Camden a town growing in wealth and prosperitv. But what folly in -Yilr. Warren to give vent in n vituperative ttirade against us, and then does not even say our statement in not correct. We did think. ( in reading his article, that when he com- < .menccd his paragraph?44 we have a mind to . 1 iMv," &(., Uut our statement shout the do.* ')Tweiation of pro|H'rly in Camden, would be j declared false, but no, nothing of tho kind ; i the Editor merely says that thu. merchants ' i liave done exceedingly well, they have n no .?w council, A-c. It strikes us that hit tntk m ould not do In-fore a jury ; the law recogutiles a criminal an innocent, uhtil his guilt i? proved, and the dufendent must bring testimony to prove the untruthfulness or the alligations, or hiaguilt is established. If wo make tho assertion that a certain property . brought only so much, and the Journal does I * not deny it, it must bo so. The proof we are prepared to give?probably a few dollars, nortnore than $100 dilt'erent from our first 1 statement. ? As regards wagons going to Camden, w? infer from tho great number passing last s*"*winter, that a great portion of the trade of j nPCamden camo from above lierc, in North f if-Carolina, and as there were so few this win& ter, i* must have been caused by tho rail- < road to Charlotte, and of course must be de- r trimental to Camden. Does tho Editor of 1 the Journal reqtrro proof in this matter also ! If so, we are prepared to give it. The fact is, it is difficult to have goods hauled from Camden, and were it not for the ! 1 Accommodation of Mr. Haseeitine's wagon,' -wo weaM h*n been out of peper several j "] times. The following is so good we must give it: '' h - Were we disposed to boast of what we fi are doing, we might write a great deal of the d many improvements all around us, and not c )ui HrtViin lav ilia naoousWu g\t tvmiSni* afvAttl J that man's 'land.' or lugging in thia man's 4?log.' We have something else to do. We hope the intenso ment il anxiety of the Tied- * ger, in being "grieved to find Camden has gone down no rapidly,' will be speedily re- * Moved, M we mutt assure him a further ex- a preaelon of his sincere regret, would be bnt o *love't labor lost' " I' !i Thank yon^Brother Warren, for the com- q pliment, it flatters us to'find that yon v read all our Mreoriala, and retain them, too ; we only regret we cannot say so much for ? the Journal. The Editor in conclusion, quotes the fob a lowing from Bums : g jf * Oh, that some power the giftie gie us, r To aeeoutatdvus as others see us." ft In rep|y, vi thla from Hhakapeare : "TV"* thy boaata, and turn thy fao?
