< i From Washington. Correspondence of the Charleston Courier. i Washington, June 1. Ere thia shall appear in type, in all probability the result of the Democratic National Convention will have been made known in your city through the agceny of the electric fluid ; therefore, I shall not weary your readers with any futile speculations am to the result I may be permitted, however, to remark that it is not improbable that the ticket so mdch com1 mended to "Young America"?Dougless and Houston?may be adopted. As to the platform, it is probable that it will embrace two leading features. The first will be the endorsement of the compromise, i1 includincr the fucritive ?l?v? l?w ar?/l ?li? second wilt be a pledge to bring back the | administration of the national finance* to a system of economy and of accountability. Mr. buchanan took occasion some months ago, in a political letter, to place the latter T * issue before the party as the most important one for their consideration at this time. Its importance cannot l?e overrated. Tlio expenses of the government will reach fifty 4 one millions this year. They have been quadruped in a little over a fourth of a century, and are rapidly on the increase, There is a lack of accountability on the part of public officers, want of ftyatem in keep"V, 'r' ing public accounts, and a recklessness of public expenditure, that favors and encourages and must lead to cupidity and oor.(' ruptton. Mr. Hunter closed the debate on the Deficiency bill yesterday, with an able and interesting speech on the administration of 4 the national finances. In the course of his speech he suggested tho necessity of the formation of a party that would look M unscrupulously to this subject, and also to 4 the preservation of the rights of the States, lift and thereby preserve the harmony and p integrity of the Union. The House considered, yesterday, a j | resolution for closing the session on the ; last of August, and postponed it till next ( week. The session will Iks closed a bent \ fa the end of August. 3 Ml, Fn>m the Cerotinian. The length and sever- 1 lty of the winter have thrown all the usual causual visiters of that season into the spring, and tilled our hotels from cellar to ^ garret. Tho principal hotels generally j tufa away from fifty almost ?very nigt. These travellers have, frequently, to drive round town for a couple of hours, visiting half a dozen hotels in their pergrinations, Uifore they find sbtlter for the night. These crowds of visiters fill our concert rooms, theatres, and all public places, night after night Fatal Accident.?On Saturday the 15th inst, a man by the name of Heney Seroggins was killed by the kick of a horse. The circumstances as we learned them, are as follows: Two persons were tig! ting, Scroggins stcpp^l up to part them, and as ho pulled them apart one of them gatherial him, both of them fell near a horse, which kicked Scrog- p irins on the forehead, breaking his skull. 8. The main door had no lock M >r bolt, and Sherwood roamed abroad when >ie pleased, but made it a point of honor to a, deep in the prison. His friends vainly urged lim to go on'; and the jililor, finnlly getting p ired of being bored, swore that ho would 1 lave to go, as he did not believe him guilty. Sherwood begged hard to remain, and proniscd to work for the jailor to pay his board. Upon these terms he was suffered to remain n prison, working daily for his keeper to ? >ay his board, until his trial came off, and he vas finally hung. Here was an honest Key (Vest criminal; he did not deem himself r| piilty, but was perfectly willing to be hung J f the community desired it He was hung; in ind as no other one has ever npplied for cap- to tal punishment here since, none has been n flic ted."
