District Meeting of Junior Order. A district meeting 'of the Junior Order was held in Edgefield Satur ' day . ight. There were^about 80 per sons, in attendance, 25 of whom were visiting delegates. Appropriate wel come addresses were made by Hon. J. 0. Sheppard in behalf of the Ju nior Order and by Mayor-J. G. Ed wards in behalf of the town. The re sponse was made by Mr. G. L. Toole of Aiken. The meeting was presided -over by District Deputy Rhoden of JBath. ? The occasion was one of much real profit as well as a very pleasant one. One matter acted upon was the adop tion of a resolution calling upon the State convention to be held in Abbe ville later to provide for the election of a legislative committee to look af ter enactment of such legislation as the members of the order feel should be passed. As the conclusion of the business session the social hour that followed was a pleasant feature, giv ing the members of the Edgefield lodge an opportunity to meet and mingle with the visiting delegates. Under the direction, of Mr. J. W. ?Reese refreshments were served, this being a very important feature of the occasion. _ U. D. C. April Meeting. Mrs. S. M. Smith was hostess for the United Daughters of the Con federacy at their enjoyable April meeting on Tuesday afternoon at one of the largest gatherings of the sea son. ? Mrs. Jeff Wright, the president, asked the Daughters to stand and unite with her in saying the Lord's .'-'?prayer, the customary beginning of the monthly meetings. After the us ual business routine, a general dis cussion of the observance of Memo rial Day was held. A Isit of commit tees will be published, and all plans .will be perfected at the May meeting, ?which will be held the first Tuesday of'the month instead of the second Tuesday, as that will give time to ar range for the 10th. Mrs. Helen Nicholson, assistant historian, presided for the after noon's program, reading, first a no tice C;om the Veteran of Miss Mil dred ' Rutherford's retirement asi Dean of Lucy Cobb college. This gifted daughter of the old South is ? going to devote the rest of her years to compiling true Southern history, and the work of such a historian will be invaluable. Mrs. Nicholson then read the sketch of General Lee's life according to the year's program pian. This month it was on the cadet days at West "Point and the marriage of Mary Ran . dolph and Lieut. Lee, and was writ ten by Mrs. P. M. Feltham. The last number was one in which the Daughters took particular pride , Mr. Arthur Tompkins offered a prize .through the South Carolina division, ? of ten dollars to the High School pu-' pil of the state who wrote the best article on General Wade Hampton. S Miss Elizabeth Lott's paper, entitled "General Wade Hampton, the Chiv alrous Knight of the Saddle" receiv ed honorable mention in the contest, and she was specially invited to read the excellent sketch before the chap ter. After the session was completed, chicken and fruit salad, sandwiches, crackers and ice tea were served du ring the pleasant social hour. Long Branch News. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Clark and Vera went to Augusta last Monday. -Miss Farra Salter is spending the week at Johnston with relatives. Misses Nell, Marie and Maude Ehoden spent last Saturday at Mrs. Oscar Clark's. Alma Clark is able to be up again. Mr. William Ripley and wife and sister had a very narrow escape last Sunday when the mule ran away and threw' them out of the buggy, but none were hurt. i Mr3. James Smith of Trenton vis ited Mrs. G. W. Scott one day last ^week. j i Miss Pansy Derrick spent last Sat urday night with Miss Ruby Ripley. Mr. and Mrs. Salter and Azilee vis aed Mrs. L M. Watson near Bates burg last Sunday. Rev. G. M. Sexton and family took tea with Mr. Thomas Ripley last Sun day. First grade : Guy Scott, T. W. Der rick and Cohan Day. Colliers News. - We are having beautiful weather now, and the grain in this section is looking fine. Our prayer meeting is still flourish ing, the last meeting being conduct ed by Mr. Martin McKie. He read part of the 6th chapter of Matthew. Mr. McKie appointed Mr. J. M. Hol land to conduct the meeting next time. Our school will 'only last .four more weeks and we know Uve will miss our teachers, Misses Vana Mor gan and Mary Carroll. Mrs. Nona Reese returned home today from a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Mathis. Miss Marie Prescott is visiting Dr. and Mrs. J. N. Crafton. Miss Aline Hammond is visiting her brother, Mr. Wyatt Hammond m Au gusta. We are sorry to hear that Mrs. Jim Stevens is ill. Hope she will soon re cover. Mr. Roy had the misfortune to get his arm hurt at the saw mill. Miss Vana Morgan is spending the week-end with home folks. "READER." Way Cross News. There were services at Stevens Creek church Sunday morning. Mr. Brooke preached a splendid sermon, and there was a large crowd to hear him. The Sunbeams, led by Miss Mary Lewis, are doing good work and are looking forward to an Easter egg hunt Friday afternoon. Mrs. Carrie Ransom has been real sick for several days, b\it we are glad to know she is able to be up now. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Turner upon the arrival of their dear little son. Women Urged to EnrolL Mrs. Richard Williams, president of-the Woman Voters' League of South Carolina sends a message to Edgefield county along with her mes sage to other counties for the women to enroll as members of the Demo cratic clubs and atten dthe club meet ings which will be held on April 22, to reorganize and elect delegates to the county convention. Women should atten dto county convention to be held the 1st Monday in May. Hon. John Gary Evans, National Democratic Committeeman for South Carolina urges the women to enroll. In the National Democratic Conven tion each state will be represented by one man and one woman as was done last year, when Hon. John Gary Evans and Mrs. Richard I. Examination for Post Office/ Pursuant to the announcement published some time ago, Mr. Holley, an employee of the Aiken post of fice, held an examination in the Court House Saturday looking to filling the vacancy in the Edgefield post office caused by the term of Mr. C. M. Mel liohamp having expired. Those who stood the examination were Mrs. W. R. Swearingen, Miss Sophie Minis, Mrs. W. S. G. Heath, Miss "Fannie Timmerman, Mr. W. L. Dunovant, Jr., Mr. ,T A. Owdom, Mr. Watson Ouzts, Mr. C. M. Mellichamp and Mr. J. G. Holland. According to rules governing Civil Service appoint ments, should the appointment be made on merit and fitness, one of the three making the highest mark on the examination will be chosen for the Edgefield post office. The state ment has been made in. the public print, even charged on the floor of the senate, we believe, that the Re publican party is ignornig this Civil Service rule in some instances in making appointments. However, it will soon be shown whether this be true or not, as the appointment will be .made at ari early date. ' Notice to Democratic Clubs of Edgefield County. As provided under Rule 5 of the Democratic party of South Carolina, the Democratic .clubs of Edgefiel'd county are required to meet on April 22, the fourth Saturday, for the pur pose of reorganizing and electing del egates to the county convention to be held at Edgefield the 1st Monday in May. They shall elect a president, one or more vice-presidents, secretary, and treasurer, an executive commit teeman, one delegate to the county convention for each 25 members and one "delegate for a majority fraction thereof based upon the number of votes polled by the club in the first primary of 1920. In addition to the foregoing, each club should elect a committee on enrollment or regis tration, an executive committee and such other committees as each club may deem expedient. The members of all clubs are urged to meet, reorganize and elect officers and delegates as required under the rules of-the party. Clubs will please forward as early as possible after re-organizing a com plete list of their officers and dele gates to the undersigned. J. L. MIMS, County Chairman. April 12, 1922. NOTICE. Acting upon the suggestion of the State Highway Commission, thereby putting Edgefield county in line with the other counties of the state, we have employed Mr. J. E. Mims to cari vas the county to apprehend owners of automobiles who have not paid the 1922 license. All who have not purchased licenses will be given until Friday, April 21, to do so. If they ?have not secured a l;cense or have not a receipt for a license, for each car or truck owned, they will be dealt with, according to law. Mr. Mims will assist any one now in securing a li cense. On Saturday the 22nd of April; 1922 the County Board of Commis-. sionens , will meet at the Morgan Bridge on Turkey Creek at 10 o'clock a. m. for the purpose of letting the contract for the building of a new | bridge. This will be a low water bridge of 3 spans. Board will also meet at Horn's Creek bridge on Mar tintown road near Republican church at 4 o'clock on the same date for the purpose of letting the contract to build a new bridge at same place. This bridge will consist of one steel span 40 feet in length with wood approach es on each side.
