IM Wednesday, July 28. LOCAL AND PERSONAL Miss Nellie Paul is visiting rela tives in Augusta and Blackville. Miss Gertrude Dunbar of Beech Island is the guest of Miss Ida Folk. . Mrs. Mattie Jennings and Mrs. T. P. Jordan are visiting Mrs. J. D. Mathis at Trenton. Mr. R. C. Miler has had his resi dence near the station repainted and otherwise improved. The Southern road announces this week that a through sleeper has been put on from Augusta to Asheville. Mr. N. D. Robertson is up> from Augusta visiting relatives in Edge field and in the county for a week. Mr. Fred Mays has returned from Clemson College where he has been taking a special summer course. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Alford are spending some time in Henderson ville, N. C., enjoying the mountain atmosphere. Miss Ruth Cain of Sumter who has just returned from the Winthrop Summer School, is here visiting her sister, Mrs. E. S. Rives. That monstrous ditching machine is yet a center of attraction. People never tire Qf seeing a wonderfully ^constructed machine in operation. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Andrews, of Greenwood, accompanied by Miss Lizzie Mims, Mrs. Andrews' sister, stopped in Edgefield for a brief visit io friends Tuesday. The second county campaign meet ing will be held at the Cooper school house on the Five Notch road Thurs day. The third meeting will be held at Antioch Thursday, August 5. Dr. R. G. Lee is conducting a meeting in Orangeburg this week,in .one of the largest country churches in the state. He will reach Edgefield for his regular services next Sunday. Mr. Sam Agner, Mr. Willie Agner and Mr. and Mrs. John E. Agner motored from their home to Philippi church Sundayj stopping as they passed through Edgefield taking the writer along with them. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Alten and lit tle Hord came down from Chappell Satuday to spend a while here with relatives. They are always very cor dially greeted when they come to Edgefield. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McFarlane of Washington, D. C. are here visiting Mr. L. H. Perscott, Mrs. McFarlane's brother, and before returning to Washington they will visit other rel atives in the county. ^ Rev. R. P. Barnes filled the pulpit -of the Baptist church Sunday night, preaching a very earnest and effect ive sermon. Mr. Barnes is very much beloved in Edgefield. He is doing a geat work among the Baptists of the west-side. The four candidates who are seek ing office of United States senate will speak in Edgefield today. The at tendance upon these meetings^ else where in the state has been small and it is probable that not many vo ters will be present today. The big water tank just to the rear of the home of Mr. S. McG. Simkins goes higher day by day and will be ready to receive the* water to sup ply the town whenever the huge pumps are ready to force it from the wells down in the valley. ? Mrs. R. T. Hill returned Saturday from a sojourn of several weeks in New York, Washington and other northern cities. Miss Mamie Duno vant, her sister who accompanied her prolonged her stay in Washington a few days and returned Monday. Mr. Mark Miller is enjoying a va cation of a week, spending the time with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Miller of the Pleasant Lane section. He recently resigned his position with the Columbia post office and has accepted a lucrative position with a wholesale grocery company in Co lumbia. i Mrs. P. M. Feltham and Jack and John left today for Southport, N. C., where they will enjoy the sea breezes with Mrs. Thompson. Mrs. Mamie N. Tillman is the guest of Mrs. George E. Davis of Orangeburg at Ridgecrest, N. C., this week. Miss Eva Adams who has held a responsible position in a hospital in Spartanburg is spending a short va cation with .her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Adams of Colliers. If it doesn't you need to consult a doctor..1 Mr. Frank Tompkins of Connells ville, Pa., has arrived to spend a por tion of his vacation here with his brother, Dr. J. G. Tompkins. Mrs. Tompkins and their little son are with her father, Mr. J. B. Davis, near Saluda, and will come to Edgefield in a few days. The writer received a card from Mr. L. S. Kemaghan a few days ago written from San Antonio, Texas, in which he stated that the crops, both cotton and corn, are fine in that sec tion. San Antonio is in the extreme southern part of the Lone Star State. The entertainment at TrentonOT It's a pity what is called the Bates Hill is a portion of the Dixie High way. Tourists going from the low country to the mountains will leave Edgefield with a bad taste in their mouth, if n?t bad words on their lips, after passing over this stretch of but a few hundred feet of road or street. About the worst roads in Edge field county are some of Edgefield's streets. Of course they are bad, and we may expect it where the pipes are being laid, but The Advertiser refers especially to the Buncombe streets where the streets have not been torn up, except by heavily loaded trucks. . Mrs. Carrie Ashley and Miss An nie Foreman of Ellenton and Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Carroll of North Au gusta passed through Edgefield last week going to the mount?ins of North Carolina in their car. Mrs. Carroll will be remembered as Miss Florence Bush. A card from Mr. F. Lloyd Parker who recently visited Edgefield stat ed that he had returned to Washing ton accompanied by Joseph Tim mons, making the trip from Green wood to Washington in three days. Mrs. Parker is visiting her brother, Trezvant Timmons and his family in Cincinnatti. Watermelons are very good this year but they are almost out of reach of the purse that has many de mands upon it. However, the prices that are asked are not out of propor tion to prices of other commodities. The pi-oducer has at last come into his own, that is to say, he is getting reasonable returns for his labor, and we are glad of it. May it continue to be so. Misses Kathleen and Evelyn Glov er of North, daughters of Mr. A. A. Glover, were visitors in Edgefield Monday and were very cordially greeted. They were accompanied by their aunt, Mrs. Carrie Forrest, of Saluda County, whom they are visit ing. Mrs. C. M. Forrest also came up Wednesday and was accompanied on her return by her sister, Miss Elise Hudgens ,who will be away a week. Very Effective Preaching. Rev. I). P. Montgomery is assist ing Rev. W. R. Barnes in the annual protracted services at Antioch church this week. He is a very earnest and deeply pious ?man; It will be recall ed that he assisted in revival ser vices in the Edgefield Baptist church about three years ago, doing very ef fective work here. Mr. Montgomery will also assist Mr. Barnes in his an nual protracted meeting at Red Hill church, commencing the third Sun day in August. The people of the West side have a great treat ip store in being able to hear the consecrated evangelist. Soon after the Red Hill meeting he will leave to fill nearly a dozen engagements in Oklahoma, Kansas and other western states. Chamberlain's Colic and Diarrhoea Remedy. Jones and the broad new sidewalk in front adds greatly to old Edgefield. It is just such modern improvements as this that are mak ing the old town new. Mr. B. B. Jones always builds well when he builds. We hope he has some other building operation in contemplation. Good Crop Prospect. Everywhere one goes in the coun ty the crops are fine, very fine. Usual ly they are "spotted," a good crop in one section or on the farm and else where, even in a near by community, the crops are poor. Not so this year. On thin land and on strong land the prospect of a large harvest is good. Of course a full crop is far, very far, from being made. One can never tell what cotton will do in the end. A fine prospect can go all to pieces in less than a week. Nevertheless, there is cause now for ,great rejoicing. W. C. T. U. Announcement. The Woman's Christian Temper ance Union will meet on Monday next at the home of Mrs. W. L. Nich olson. All members are asked to bring in their dues at this time in order to close up the financial year preparatory to the State Convention at Johnston early in October.
