Candidates For State Offices Spoke. About 100 people, including a doz. cn or more ladies, assembled in the . Court House Friday to bear the can didates for the State offices speak. The meeting was presided over by the county chairman, J. L. Mims, who requested Rev. G. W. M. Taylor to offer the invocation. i Governor Cooper was at tte time in San Francisco attending tie Na tional Democratic Convention ?ad wrote to the chairman expressing his Tegrets at being unable to be here to thank the people of Edgefield for their loyal support of him. As the candidates for State superintendent of education, State treasurer, attor ney general, comptroller general and commissioner of agriculture are un opposed, th? candidates for these of fices were not present. The first to address the meeting .were the three candidates for the of fice of lieutenant governor, these speaking in the order named Octavus Cohen of Charleston, W. G. Harvey, of Charleston and O. K. Mauldin of ?Greenville. There are really no issufe and these gentlemen sp*oke along practically the same lines-educa tion, good roads, law enforcement, etc. The candidates for the office of ad jutant and inspector general, Capt. A. H. Marchant of Orangeburg and "Gen. W. W. Moore of Columbia, spoke 15 minutes each. Capt. Mar chant referred to his military train ing as a graduate of the Citadel and of his service in the Spanish-Ameri can war and recently in the war with Germany. Although 40 years of age ;at the time he volunteered for service and after his training in the camps iiere, he spent nearly two years in .overseas service. Gen. Moore is seek ing re-election on his record of ser vice as adjutant general for the past ten years. He promises the same , faithful service in the future as he has endeavored to render in the past, if elected. ^ T'he four candidates for the office of railroad commissioner next spoke in the order named. R. L. Moss, a conductor on the Southern railroad briefly stated his reasons for aspir ing to the_ office and he was followed by D. W." Gaskill of Kershaw, who has b?en treasurer of Camden coun ty for a numbeT of years, D. L. Smith ?of Walterboro and Frank W. Shealy, . ?of Lexington, who reviewed his rec tord of service in this office for the ?past six years. All young men of Edgefield coun ty are invited to attend a smoker which will be given by the tank company in the Court House Friday evening, July 2nd at 8:30 p. m. All members of the company have been notified of the meeting and are ex pected to attend without fail. For the past several weeks the of ficers of the company owing to pressing business have been unable to recruit very actively but now it is planned to put on a recruiting cam paign and complete the quota for the company. It is only necessary to re cruit ten or twelve more men and then the company will be mustered in. Quite a number of college men have returned home and have an nounced their intention of joining the company so it is believed that the quota can be completed with little trouble. Good smokes will be provided at the smoker Friday night and it is hoped that a large number of young men will attend. ( Barbecue Monday. On Monday, July 5, we will serve a barbecue dinner on the campus of the Edgefield High School, consisting of hash, barbecued meats, bread, pickle, onion sauce, tomatoes, etc. Price 75 cents. He has filled this office for eight or ten years and is thoroughly familiar with every phase of the duties, using his best endeavor to give entire satisfaction to all persons in his district, both plaintiffs and defendants. Winthrop College Scholarship and Entrance Examination. The examination for the award of vacant Scholarships in Winthrop College and for the admission of new students will be held at the County Court House on Friday, July 2, at 9 a. m. Applicants must be not less than sixteen years of age. When Scholarships are vacant after July 2 they will be awarded to those mak ing the highest average at this ex. amination.
