Key have been here for several days visiting Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Key. v .Mrs. Norton, who has been the guest of her daughter, Mrs. L. A. Peatross, returns to her home in Cleveland Thursday. The quarterly statements of the Bank of Trenton, the Bank of John ston and the Peoples Bank of Edge field-are published in this issue. Mr. and Mrs. L. Y. Moore spent several days in Charleston last week visting their son, Elwyn Moore, who - is making a fine record at the Cita del. Mr. ' and Mrs. Robert Mabry and children of Abbeville, and Miss Julia Mabry, of Columbia, were guests of Misses iMinna and Anna Bee on Sun day. Dr. C. E. Burts will preach in the Baptist church here next Sunday morning and evening and also at Horn's Creek in the afternoon at the usual hour. ) The Advertiser has yet on hand some garden seed sent us by Con gressman Byrnes for free distribu tion. Mr. and Mrs. William Dobson and children of Beech Island and Mr. and Mrs. Manly Dobson of Augusta, spent the week-end with their moth er, Mrs. Emma Dobson at "Fairview.' He has only recent ly located in Columbia, having pre viously been in the employment of the Southern in East Tennessee. The Edgefield Chapter U. D. C., will meet on Thursday, May 20th at 4:?0 at the home of Mrs. B. L. Mims. All in arrears with the 25 cents ask ed for by the Convention for the Jef ferson Davis monument are request ed to bring it to this meeting. A full meeting is desired. The friends of Mr. T. B. Lanham and Miss Ellie Miller .Lanham were delighted that they came over from Columbia and spent Saturday and Sunday. Mr. Lanham conducted the morning and evening .services in the Baptist church for Dr. Lee, giving very inspiring messages on both oc casions. Mr. C. F. Brooks, the superinten dent of the Edgefield schools, has heen very fortunate in securing Dr. J. S. Moffatt to deliver the literary address of the commencement this year. Dr. Moffatt ranks among the foremost educators in the State and the people of Edgefield are also for tunate in being able to hear him. Maj. W. A. Collett is up from Au gusta for to-day. He states that he will return to 'Edgefield June 1 and will begin to arrange for the open ing of a modern drug store in the store room of the hotel next to the lobby. He will only carry drugs and drug sundries, leaving off groceries entirely. Maj. Collett will also install a modern soda fountain. Little Esther Rubenstein, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ruben stein, and another little girl were riding a horse Friday afternoon and the animal became frightened, throw ing them to the ground. Esther was so severely shocked that she was un conscious until the next day, but be gan to improve and has entirely re-t covered. The accident came near be ing fatal. Her friends rejoice that she\was not more severely injured. Sunday Services at the Metho dist Church. The usual services will be held at the Methodist Church on Sunday. Preaching by the pastor, Rev. G. W. M. Taylor at ll a. m. and 8:15 p. m. Sunday School meets at 10 a. m., Mr. S. B. Nicholson, Superintendent. County Commissioner. The first to announce for the of fice of county commissioner is Mr. Walter L. Byrd of Pleasant Lane. Mr. Byrd is largely connected and is well known throughout Edgefield county and has many friends who will be gl?d to give him th?ir support at the ballot box. If elected Mr. Byrd will render a full measure of con scientious service. Mr. R. J. Moultrie. In making his bow to the voters of Edgefield county this week, as a candidate for the q/fice of supervisor, Mr. R. J. Moultrie^ is no stranger to the people. Ten years ago, 1919-1910 Mr. Moultrie served the county in this important office, giving the peo ple a straightforward, business-like administration,, -Mr. Moultrie states that if elected this summer he will give his entire time to the duties of the office. He will meet with the peo ple at the regular campaign meetings but will be unable to cover the entire county. For Supervisor. ,-The eastern side of the county is repesented in the supervisor's race by Mr. W. L. Clark, a good citizen who is well known in practically every section , of the county. During the time that he served as deputy sheriff Mr. Clark'made many friends in Edgefield and other parts of the county. He is active, alert and pro gressive, pledging himself to serve the people of all sections of the coun ty alike and impartially if elected. It will be his constant aim and endeav or to give the people a satisfactory administration, both in conducting the office and in improving the public roads. Mr. A. A. Edmunds. With the experience of one term in this important office, Mr. A. A. Ed munds' comes forward this week and announces his candidacy for super visor. In the campaign preceding his last election and during the time which he served the people in this capacity, Mr. Edmund's watchword was "Economy" and he. has not changed his platform. If elected he will give close attention to the du ties and endeavor to give the tax payers economic administration: As he meets with the people a "goin' and comin' " for the next three months he will give the other planks in his platform. He. is not without leg islative experience, having serted in the House of Representatives sev eral years ago. Mr. Wells has a large family connection and is well known throughout the county, needing no introduction to the people among whom he and his ancestors have re sided for many generations. Mr. Wells will give the people his views on the issues of the day as the cam paign progresses during the slimmer. Maurice Matteson Concert. Thursday evening, May the 27th, the Matteson Concert Company of Columbia, S. C., will give a musical concert in the Opera House under the auspices of the Philharmonic Music Club. We are very anxious that this concert be a success in every way. The music club is desir ous of bringing the very best talent we can secure before our people, for it is being realized more and more that music is a very necessary part of one's education. These artists are recognized as the State's best; therefore, help us to se cure a large audience for them. Shooting at Negro Church. Sunday about two o'clock one ne gro was killed and another mortally wounded at Pleasant Grove church. Eugene Oliphant who was under the influence of whiskey at the time walk ed up to an automobile in which was seated Eugene Strother and wife and his sister. Oliphant began to curse and Strother remonstrated with him for cursing in the presence of his wife and sister. Thereupon Oliphant drew a pistol and fired at Strother and instead of hitting the man the ball entered the head of Strother's wife, killing her instantly. Her five* months old baby was sitting in her lap at the time the shooting occurred. Alonza Strother, a brother of Eugene ran around behind the car and fired upon Oliphant, two shots taking ef fect. He was brought to the office of a physician in Edgefield and died about eleven o'clock from the ef fects of the wounds. Inquests were h?ld by Magistrate N. L. Brunson over both bodies and the usual ver dict in such cases was rendered. Alonza Strother was committed to jail but has been released on bond. - "Had the negroes owned no pistols or had they been left at home, in stead of being carried to church on Sunday, the shooting affair would not have occurred and both of the dead would have been living to-day. Surely this should be a lesson to other negroes who own and carry pistols. The habit should be broken up.
