INFORMATION GIVEN ABOUT EARTH WORMS; Common Impression ls That They Are Injurious-to Lawns. Where They Become an 'Annoyance Application of Kerosene Will Prove Beneficial-Common White Grub Also Nuisance. ^Prepared by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) The small boy who is preparing to,' go fishing has a friendly feeling for earthworms-known by juvenile anglers as "flshin' worms"-but his fa ther, with a particular pride in a well kept lawn, may regard them as ene mies. T e common impression is that earthworms are injurious to lawns, but the United States department of agri culture, through its bureau of ento mology, says that the damage is prob ably very light. In fact, it is believed :that instead of being injurious these worms are really beneficial in increas ing the.fertility of the soil by bringing to the surface soil from a lower depth, ?and in this way keeping up a very slight but continual top dressing. , Under some circumstances it is bet ter that the worms be exterminated, though they are not objectionable on house lawns. In such cases lt ls rec ommended by the department en to mologists that the soil be drenchec with kerosene emulsion. This treat ment gives good results against th? i common white grub, which ls also at enemy to lawns. Saturating the ol with a solution of corrosive sublimate ifs also recommended, but it should b< ?remembered that this preparation li .deadly poison, and the greatest cart should be used in Its preparation anc' xtse. Three ounces of this substance should be dissolved in two quarts ol ?water in some glass or glazed vesse .which will not absorb the poison. ' The value of barnyard manure bat ?always been recognized, but the protee ?tlon necessary to preserve the fertility .ot the manure has not been recognized The value of manure on different solh ?ls Illustrated by experiments in differ ent parts of the state by the Missour 'college of agriculture. As an averagt ?of all experiments on outlying fle?di ?barnyard manure has brought a rerun: of $1.90 a ton, although on some of th< "fields the return has exceeded $3 ton. On'one experimental field the re turn has been at the rate of $4.10 ? ?ton. These experiments show that th? farmer who Is not caring for his ma nure ls overlooking a most importan' source of revenue. CLOVER SEED AND HAY CROP Pennsylvania Farmer Does His Cut ting When Most of Heads Aro Filled and Brown. A crop of seed and of hay can be made .rom the second crop of clover just as well as only one crop, accord ing to the experience of a Pennsyl vania farmer. In his practice the crop is cut when most of the heads are filled and brown. It is then cured in the usual way for hay and when good and dry the hullers will get out all the seed as well as if the stalks were dead and weatherbeaten.
