Washington, Oct., 17-Attorney General Palmer and his official ass?;-; ciates in the fight on the high cost of living determined today to enlist the aid of the women of America. By appealing to the comptroller of household finances throughout the counry, it is hoped to inaugurate an epoch of real economy which will offset the "buy now" propaganda of trades people. Futhermore, an at tempt will be made to discourage the frequent changes in styles dictated by the makers of women's apparel and thereby * effect a saving in clothes. r Another important decision taken at today's meeting was to release more surplus supplies held by the government, if it" can be done with out embarrassment to the depart ment involved. Secretaries Baker and Daniels and Chairman John Bar ton Payne of the shipping board, were invited to the conference for the first time for that purpose. Mr. Baker being unable to attend, the attorney general and Mr. Daniels will confer with him next week. Mr. Daniels reports that he had sugar enough to run the navy six months, I but before he relaesed any of it he wanted to be sure of ample re placements. Speakers to go Out. j Co-operation of the housewives has been the subject of extended conferences between H. E. Figg of the department of justice, and Mrs. Edward F. Costigan, who offered the government the full resources of the consumers league and the League of I Women Voters in the campaign- to take the inflatation out o^ prices. As a result, speakers will be put soon in every state to carry the message that one way to beat the profiteers is to igncre propaganda saying that prices I are certain to go higher and wait for I the decline which officials say is in evitable. These speakers will be arm ,ed with facts and figures gathered 'by the cauncil of national defense in its war work and showing production costs in virtually every industry in the country. In undertaking to stimulate a pa triotic refusal to be stampeded into buying new clothes simply because the designers change thc styles from six to eight times a year the speak ers, it was said, will point out that from eight to thirty-five per cent is charged for style and that a propor tionate amount will be saved by re ducing the style changes to a reason able number. Mr. Palmer and Director Clarkson of vthe council of national defense will confer soon on how best to reach women by printed appeals similar to those used by the food administra tion. The council's affiliated state ort ganizations will assist. What Has Been Accomplished. The first complete official report of what has been accomplished so far by the use of such laws as were available, was given the conference by Mr. Palmer showing that there have been 86 cases of actual seizures under the food control act with 22 cases still under investigations. Three cases have been held for the grand jury and in two other cases jail sentences and fines have been imposed. The seizures have taken place m 18 different states and re sulted in placing on the market through normal channels of trade, 99,047 pounds of cheese, 157,953 pounds of poultry, more than 200, 000 pounds of fish, 52,056 cans of tomatoes, 765,615 pounds of salt pork, 21,053,880 eggs, 1,427,062 pounds of butter, 4,831,331 pounds of suger, l,830sacks of potatoes and quantities of beans, conr, baking powder, salmon, coffee, salt and other edibles.
