Thanking you, J. H CANTELOU, County Chairman. Colored People Planning to Erect School Building. The colored people are trying to build a graded school in the Lime stone section. We have consulted or tried to consult ali of the white peo ple. All that we failed to consult was due to inconvenience and not that past kindness was not appreciated. Those to whom we have spoken seem ?o be deeply interested. We want it understood that this is to he an academy built for the purpose of having the colored children taught by colored teachers. It is not to build up a political atmosphere, but we will break down such influences and do away with race prejudice. Color ed boys and girls and being taught in Northern colleges and as soon as they finish they drift North. We have been discouraged by some few colored people who do not seem to understand what a graded school means, which shows that edu cation is needed very badly. But we did not feel so badly since we knew that this is a community where mu tual friendship exists. We are plan ning an educational mass meeting to be held on November 13 and 14 to raise money to finish the building. The public is cordially invited. A great many of our white friends have voluntarily promised to help us raise the $1,000 needed. Several white. people have already given liberally and we believe all will help, knowing the need. We are here where masses of colored children have not been taught and we feel re sponsible to God, if they fail to even learn to read and write their names. Oh, may our white friend and color ed as well, help us. God will crown His laborers with abundant success. P. L. ANDERSON, Pleasant Lane, S. C. Strong Lyceum Course for the Season. A letter from the Piedmont Ly ceum man has this to say, "Our sales on the Knowlton Glee and Banjo Club have been so large that they cannot possibly reach Edgefield un til late in October or the first days of November, probably November ' the 3rd. "The Cambridge Players come about two or three weeks later. We had expected' to get the Knowltons to Edgefield during the week of Oe tober 20th, but the demand for them . in the territory named above has '. been unusually heavy. Mr. Milton is ! to reach Edgefield early in October to assist you in your season ticket i sale." We shall be glad to have you put the Lyceum course in your budget. The people. who bring us these at tractions are high toned, Christian gentlemen, and the men and women - who compose the several companies are clean of life and of the best of our citizens-many ' are educators, artists of a high type and lecturers 1 on ennobling themes. Even the fun and }oke is clean and of a high or- ! der. These attractions are all of the best talent procurable, by the best Lyceum companies, and come to us ' with a guarantee that we may wel come any one of them into our homes with perfect safety. It is of vital importance that we cultivate a taste for clean pleasure in ourselves and children. The type jof entertaining to be found in the or- j dinary vaudeville lowers our moral .standards and weakens our moral ?bre. Do not forget that every thing we see and hear leaves its impress upon our characters, and children .are more influenced than those of ' nt at ure years. We will have especial ! thought for the children as we ai rways have and shall reserve the front rows of .c-,ats for them. The Civic League is not conduct- . ir.g this lyceum course for anything but the good of our community. Do not forget that this is your -course and tell your neighbors about it. So far a3 we know there is no ; other course in our county for the winter and we shall take pleasure in placing our season tickets and adver tising sheets all over the county. Whereas God in His all-wise Prov idence has seen fit to remove from our midst, our friend and brother mason, W. J. Harling, and while we bow in humble submission to His will, we deeply deplore his depar ture. Therefore, be it Resolved, First, that Cold Spring Lodge has lost a loyal member. All the teachers of the graded and High School are invited to be pres ent. Four Stills Seized and Four Negroes in Jail. Saturday Deputy Collectors P. J. Colemon C. R. Rector, State Consta ble J. T. Smyrl and Sheriff W. R. Swearingen went down in the Col liers community and seized four stills, catching the following negroes in the act, Willie Holmes, Peter Young, Robert Holmes and Plumer Holmes. All of the negroes confessed and are now in jail. A white man, originally from North Carolina, was implicated but he took "leg bail" and has not been apprehended. The Advertiser has been informed that Mr. Joe Hammond, the constable of Magistrate Pardue, is a brave and vigilant officer, using every possible effort to break up stills and other forms of lawlessness. A meeting of the executive com mittee of the Red Cross will be held Friday aftrnoon at five o'clock at the office of Mr. W. B. Cogburn. Im portant letters from headquarters will be read and must be answered. A full attendance is urged. Increased Pastor's Salary. At a conference held last Sunday immediately after the morning ser vice the members of the ' Baptist church unanimously adopted a reso lution increasing the salary of Dr. R. G. Lee, the pastor, from $2,000 to $3,000, his first year's pastorate closing with the month of Septem ber. This increase is well deserved. There is no more indefatigable worker in Edgefield than Dr. Lee, his strenuous activities extending over the entire seven days of the week and frequently far into the night. Dr. Lee has repeatedly shown too, that his activities are not con fined to his immediate membership, nor to the town of Edgefield, but he stands ready to serve everybody and every part of the county.
