Crews spent the week-end in Laurens visiting the relatives of Mr. Crews. Mr. W. H. Turner ran up to Green wood and spent Christmas day with his mother, Mrs. Maggie Turner. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Miller spent a portion of the holiday season in Co lumbia with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rhodes of Macon spent the Yuletide here as guests of Mr. and Mrs. N. G. Evans. Mrs. Agatha A. Woodson spent several days in Augusta last week with Mr. and Mrs. Walter McDonald. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Sawyer of Cam ac, Ga., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. N. M. Jones during the holidays. Miss Lois Kernaghan, a charming young lady from Batesburg, is here Tisiting her cousin, Mrs.? J. W. Stew art. Mr. James E. Hart came home from his regular tour in Florida to ?pend the holiday season with his family. Mr Beauregard Timmons came .ver from Columbia for a day last week, being very cordially greeted by his friends. Mr. J. Monroe Ouzts came down from Newberry last week to visit his brother, Mr. Pearce Ouzts, and .ther relatives. Mr B. T. Rainsford was a welcome koliday visitor in Edgeiield, having come over from Camp Jackson on a short furlough. Mr. Roscoe Brigham and Mr. Pick .ns Butler of Augusta, Miss Sunie Talbert were the guests of Miss Anna Belle Saunders last week. Major T. J. Lyon came down from Greenwood to spend the holiday sea son in Edgefield. He received a warm hand-clasp from his friends. J.'T. McManus, Jr., is enjoying a ' furlough at home. He always scatters sunshine wherever he gt>es and has bee cordially greeted by his friends. Mr. Edgar Hart, who is a traveling salesman and works in the lower sec tion of the State, came home to spend the Yuletide with his parents Mr. and Mrs. James E. Hart. Mrs Jambs S. Byrd went over to Columbia to spend the festive season with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Fitzmaurice. Dr. Byrd joined them for several days during the week. The cartoon work alone of Miss Vera MacKelvie in the Opera Houaj , next Wedesday night will be won the price of admission. Tell your friends about this lyceum entertain ment, the second of the course. Mr. Ouzts Burnett, who has been in the naval service for the past five years, spent several days here during the Yuletide with his sister, Mrs. L. H. Prescott, and uncle, Mr. L. G. Quarles. Edgefield has had no holiday visi or who was more cordially greeted than Major R. S. Anderson who, ac cording to his long-standing custom, tame down from Washington to spend Christmas. Mr Manly Timmons has been spending some time here with his family and has been very warmly greeted by his old Edgefield friends who hope that his visits will be more frequent in 1919. Our young friends. Platt Brunson and Gus Cheatham, came home on a brief furlough for the holidays, re turning to their duties at the naval training station in Charleston the latter part of the week. Mr. D. V. Harris purchased the farm of Mrs. Lemie Talbert, the old Mays home, in the Horn's Creek sec tion, a?d W?H move his family thi' week. Mr. Harris has already made plans for spending a considerable sum in repairing this large' country residence. .^i Miss Grace Dobson came down from Greensboro, N. C., to spend the holiday season with her mother, Mrs. Emma Dobson. For the past year Miss Grace has been making her home with her brother, Mr. Charles R. Dobson, assisting him'in his large shoe store. Mr. and Mrs. G. N. Ennett have gone to Florida to spend the winter. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Holstein enter tained at tea on the evening of the Remember the Artists' Trio at the Edgefield Opera House, January 8th. Miss Helen Dorn visited her friend Miss Kathleen Walsh, in Sumter this week. Misses Ethel and Corrie Cheatham spent Christmas with their aunt Mrs. Talbert in Sumter. Miss Helen Nicholson entertained her friends at an evening party du ring the holidays. Miss Helen Tillman is spending some time in Columbia, being the guest of Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Cooner. Mr. A. Claud Hart'has been spend ing the holiday season here visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. John K. Aull were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Tomp kins during the Yuletide. Mrs. J. W. Thompson and little daughter of Southport, N. C., spent the holidays with Mrs Kate Butler. Miss Bessie Dunovant'was hostess during the holidays for a number of her young friends at an evening par ty. Miss Kellah Fair spent the Christ mas time with her brother Mr. War ren Fair and his family in Beech Island. Mrs. R. G. Lee and little Beulah spent a part of the Christmas time in Greenville with Mrs. Lee's mother Mrs. Gentry. Mr. Julian Key came over from Columbia for a stay of several days last week with his parent?, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. K*ey. Miss Miriam Norris, Miss Gladys Rives and Harold Norris attended a large house party in Georgetown last week, returning Monday night. Robert Gray is here on a furlough for the holiday season. This is his first furlough since he volunteered for service in the navy earlv last summer. Lieut. W. F. Nichols, Lieut. James Munger, Lieut. R. L. Lewis, Misses Anna Belle Saunders and Elizabeth Smith were week-end guests of Miss Sunie Talbert. Red Cross Annual Meeting, Major and Mrs. Scott, Major Blanton, Major and Mrs Leonard, Lieut. Sey mour, Mrs. Mamie N. Tillman and Miss Elizabeth Smith. The three very talented ladies who will present a miscellaneous program pie in the Opera House next Wednes day night, come to Edgefield w:th the highest endorsement. Do not fail to hear them. ? Mr. and Mrs. Norwood Cleveland have been spending the past ten days here with Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Padgett. Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland, ac companied by Miss Gladys Padgett, spent several days last week in At lanta. The Civic League of Edgefield has undertaken this year the placing be fore the public, the season's Lyceum course. This time there will be a splendid combination of talent in song, story, musical instruments and a cartoonist of magic skill. Come and see and hear. Little Thomas Mott Kernaghan celebrated his second birthday on Tuesday afternoon with a party for a few of his little friends and cousins and some of the older ones who loved him. The table was beautifully deco rated in pink and white candles which always delight thc little child's heart The refreshments were v?rv dainty and appropriate. Miss Annie May Timmons who has been in the employ of the govern ment at Washington during the past year, spent Christmas with her pa rents Mr. and Mrs. Manly Timmons. Her friend Miss Diette Maynard of Greenwood also spent the holidays with her, and Joe Timmons, belong ing to the S. A. T. C. at the B. M. I., | added his presence to the Christmas cheer of this home. The second lyceum entertaiment of the season will be given in the Opera House next Wednesday night, January 8, by a trio of very talented women, each without a peer in her respective field. A miscellaneous pro gramme consisting of vocal and in strumental music, reading and a dis play of draftsmanship in cartoon work. Surely no one will lack for en tertainment when so complete a pro gramme Wji??- be presented. Something will bc presented to entertain every age and every taste. James holds a lucrative govern ment position in the national capital. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott Simkins are here from Norfork, Va., for a visit of ten days to Mr. and Mrs. S. McG. Simkins. Leslie Edmunds came home on a short furlough for the holidays. He has been assigned to a government boat that plies the Potomac River been cordially greeted by his friends. Douglas Timmerman has been en joying the holidays at home on a furlough. His friends have greeted him very cordially and hope he will soon receive an honorable discharge. A bold youno; thief, a colored boy, stole a bicycle from in front of Stew art & Kernaghan's, Christma s eve. They have offered a reward for the recovery of the wheel and apprehen sion of the thief. District Attorney J. William Thur mond entertained the members of the bar and some other friends with an elaborate tea Tuesday, ev??ing^ the occasion being one of unusual pleas ure to those who were honored with invitations. The people of Edgefield extend a hearty welcome to Mr. W. S. Pearson who recently purchased the farm of Mr. S. A. Brunson. He is a progres sive farmer and a citizen of sterling qualities. We need more of his kind to locate among us. Mr. Egbert Morgan arrived this morning from Camp Greenleaf, Ga., on a furlough of ten days, this being his first furlough since he went to camp last May. Egbert has made a fine record from the first day he en. tered the service. His friends have greeted him very cordially. Mr. A. A. Edmunds has purchased the lot adjoining the Mitchell phar macy and will soon erect a one story brick building thereon. The building will have an attractive front of pres sed brick and plate glass widows. It is probable that Mr. Edmunds will conduct a business of some kind in the new store. Mr. J. D. Garren of Woodruff who recently purchased the farm of Mr. D. V. Harris is moving his family this week to his newyl purchased home. Edgefield county needs hun dreds and hundreds of good, men of the class to which Mr. Garren be longs. We welcome him and his fam ily. Lieut. A. B. Carwile, of Abbeville county, has be,en engaged to serve Edgefield county as demonstration agent, succeeding Mr. W. E. Stokes. Lieut. Carwile recently was granted an honorable discharge from the army and has already entered upon his duties here. He and Mrs. Carwile will receive a cordial greeting from our people. Dr. James S. Byrd is having an ar chitect draw plans for his modern two-story brick building which is to be erected on the lot situated midway between the Mitchell drug store and the Yonce garage. The first floor will be a store-room and the second, Dr. Byrd will have a modern dental of fice, laboratory and reception rooms. D. Lyon, Jr., is at home enjoying a furlough. He recently re turned from a trip to Europe on the battleship Pennsylvania which was one of the nearly a score of battle ships that escorted the "George Wash ington" to France when it carried President Wilson to Europe to at tend the Peace Conference. While his ship is lying in New York harbor Mr. Lyon was granted leave to visit the homefolk. He has made a fine record since he volunteered for naval service, having been promoted sever al times.
