Pursuant to the call, a large num ber of citizens met in the court house Saturday afternoon to consider mat ters pertaining to the Dixie Highway. The meeeting was presided over by Supervisor R. N. Broadwater. Upon motion of Hon. B. E. Nicholson it simultaneously agreed that a Coun ty Dixie Highway Council be select- ' ed which will be done as soon as the necessary instructions are received. The matter of locating the High way from Edgefield to Greenwood, whether by way of Pleasant Lane or by way of Dr. J. H. Self's, was fully and freely discussed. Supervisor Broadwater stated that he desires to be perfectly fair to all parties at in terest and tnat all should have a hear ing before the State Highway Com mission. A Statement From Mr. Mims. After giving the matter serious consideration, I have decided to yield to the solicitations of a num ber of my friends who have nominat ed me as a candidate for the house of represefitatives and have decided to serve in that capacity, if chosen by the people of the county. Owing to the great demands upon my time, I will probably be unable to make a thorough canvass of- the county, but it will afford me pleasure to meet with the people whenever and wherever possible. i . A Ringing Call for AH Patriots to Support Tillman. .Editor The Augusta Chronicle: Governor Manning's letter to Sen ator Tillman, printed in the Chroni cle a few days back, giving his rea sons for urging Congressman Lever to get in the race for the United States Senate against Senator Till man. Now, in my judgment, his rea sons are not sufficient to convince 'the people of South Carolina that it ?was altogether necessary for Con gressman Lever to have done so. I I do not know Governor Manning's motives-he may have been perfect ly honest in his intentions to do some good-but, nevertheless, it was a grave mistake for him to have done so in this day and time. We need no divisions in our ranks at a time like this. The war of liberty and freedom is ours and it is necessary that all of us stand firmly together if this fight is to be won; and win we must, at all costs. , I believe that Governor Manning and Congressman Lever will have a hard job in getting the people of this state to believe that it was the prop er thing for Congressman Lever to ?do at this time. One of Governor Manning's reas ons for urging Congressman Lever to enter the race was that he was fear ful of Tillman being able to defeat Blease for the United States senate, Tillman's age barring him from stumping the state in his own interest Now, I believe that this is another grave mistake for Governor Manning to make. This race for the senate at this time, according io my views, .is a question of loyalty or disloyalty to our President and to our country. In my estimation any man who thinks or says that Tillman could not defeat Blease in this race for the senate casts a reflection upon every loyal man in this state and should at once make them an apology. No, sir, never! I have an abiding faith in the people of South Carolina doing the right thing at the right time, and that is to elect Ben Tillman to the United States senate. This is no time for petty politics. Let us all remember that the United States is now fighting one of the most bitter and righteous wars ever fought by any nation on earth and our boys "over there" shedding their life's^ blood every day that we may gain victory. They are standing under the folds of Old Glory, pleading only that our government and people stand back of them until the victory is won. Now I say, friends, there is no bet ter way to do so than to elect Tillman to the senate to succeed himself. He has been tried and not found want ing. He has been faithful to our state and by all means let us send bim back. Then, boys, listen! The bugle call is being sounded. It is coming from South Carolina's old Confederate Veterans. They are writing from Georgia-from as far as Texas and from the mountains of South Caro lina-asking the people to reelect Tillman. "Give us Tillman! Send Till man back to the senate!" That is their cry. Now what are you, their sons and grandsons, going to do about it? No, for surely you are going to gratify these brave old heroes' desire and send Tillman back to the United States senate. The writer is somewhat of an old Confederate and I love my state and nation better than I love any man or set of men. Aye, better than I love my own life, for I stand ready at all times to lay it on the altar of my country. And I wish to say right now that I have never seen the day since Tillman went into the United States senate that I could not seek my humble bed at night and calmly lay my head upon my pillow and rest feeling confident that South Caroli na's interests were safe in his hands. And I believe it will ever be so just as long as he is there. One of the most powerful and (most convincing articles that I have seen stating why Lever should not enter the race for the senate at this time was written by thc editor of the Augusta Chronicle a month or so back. He says he likes the Navy fine. We were issued mosquito nets the other day as the mosquitoes were about to carry us on a furlough. There are four boys to a tent, and we have three druggists counting my self, one from Georgia and the others from South Carolina. We only have eight druggists in our bunch, so we all lined up and made some kodak pictures the other day. 1 only get liberty now on Satur days and Sundays from one in the afternoon to one that night and I always go to church on Sunday night as it is my only chance. At first things were dull but I have met lots of girls and things are more interest ing now. The boys that are not in uniform are out of luck here. There arc some funny names in the Navy. We never say going to meals. It is always going to "chew", and we never say "going on leave," but "going ashore." I am liking the Navy better every day and if I ever get home again and the cook quits, or the house-maid 1. ?ves, you will not have any trouble for I can do anything now and I believe I could do housekeeping as well as a lady. I have been vaccinated and have ' ' had all three doses of the typhoid se rum, getting my last one today, and I am feeling fine. We have five more weeks of school and I hear we are going to be shipped across I am glad to say; but "here's ' hoping" I will get home once more before I go.
