The only "well done" for the weath er man comes from the plumbers. , We join the little child in asking: "Where does all of this cold come from anyway?" The Germans do not trust the Rus sians, nor do the Russians trust the Germans, and all the while the Allies are profitting by their distrust. Well he should have put it in a Liberty Bond or in bank. Other trunk-depositors had better profit by this man's loss. The government has already launch ed the 1917 campaign to exterminate mosquitoes. But it appears to us that the pesky little creatures are about as hard to locate just now as German sopi?s. Through a strong combination of science and law-the former outlining the way and the latter enforcing it meningitis should not be allowed to j>read from the camps and become epidemic. Manager McAdoo has decreed that unnecessary passenger travel must give way for necessary freight traffic. This is a long step toward relieving the coal shortage and freight conges tion. True love defies distance. A young lady journeyed last week from Spokane. Wash., to Augusta, a distance of 3.?U0 miles to wed a young soldier at Camp Hancock, securing the marriage license herself after reaching Augusta. There was never a better time to use commercial fertilizers than during the year that lies, before us, provided, of course, that they are purchased and used wisely. .Maxiinnm yields from a minimum of labor is what most farmers need now, and thi3 can best be'accomplished by a generous, judi cious fertilizing. Should Ratify Amendment. The Maryland legislature is to meet today and will take up the discussion of " the prohibition amendment to the fed eral constitution. The South Carolina legislature will probably be the first to get an amendment passed, for Balti more is yet the oasis for thousands of dry mids. -Columbia Record. - As the South Carolina legislature is the first law-making body to convene in prohibition territory, there should be no delay on the part of our legisla ture in ratifying the prohibition amend ment to the National Constitution. All eyes throughout the country are fixed upon South Carolina, and for that rea son the issue should be squarely and firmly met-no dilly-dallying, nor de laying. A3 public sentiment through out tho State is overwhelmingly for prohibition, the adoption of the amend ment would only be carrying out the wishes of the people. South Carolinians are a thoughtful, brave people who never hesitate in taking the initiative. Let's set the, pace for other States and not wait to see what others will do. Such a policy would be weak and positively puerile. Don't let the channels of your biigi-y wheels run without a tire. Let us put new lubber tires on at a very reasonable price. Leaving out of consideration the im measurable and unspeakable suffering and privation brought upon the nations of the earth by the inordinate ambi tion and greed for world-power of the Kaiser, he has brought woes without number upon his own people of the present and succeeding generations. In addition to the volumes that could be written recounting the suffering of the German people, the alienation of the nations of the earth from Germany should cause the Kaiser the gravest concern. However favorable a settle ment the Germans may secure at the close of hostilities, and none ot us be lieve that peace terms will be favora ble to those who precipitated the war, Germany will lie a prostrate and bleed ing nation. With depleted resources and demoralization on every hand, Germany will need friends after the war. Despite her great need, not an individual or a nation will be disposed to aid in re-establishing her industries and commerce. On the other hand, every hindrance possible will be thrown in her way. The following incident will serve to show how great and lasting will be the hatred toward Germany and the Ger man people after hostilities cease: An English firm recently feceived a post card from a German in a prison camp asking the price of wool underwear and the merchant in his reply enclosed the following "Solemn Oath:" "To mark our horror and disgust at the methods of Germany since July, 1914, we swear that we will not, (a) knowingly purchase anything made in Germany, (b) transact ?business with or through a German for five years after peace is declared. So help us God." The Americans will not forget the fate of the Lusitania and other horri ble crimes committed by the Germans for a period longer than five years after peace is restored. -m ?rn A TWICE TOLD TALE. One of Interest to Our Readers. Good news bears repeating, and when it is confirmed after a long lapse of time, even if we hesitated to believe it at first hearing, we feel secure in accepting its truth now. My sides and hips also got eore and lame and loss of sleep made me weak and exhausted. Doan's Kid ney Pills rid me of the attack." Over Three Years Later Mrs. Jackson said: "My back or kidneys seldom trouble me now, but when they do. Doan's Kidney* Pills al ways give me quick relief." Price 00c. at all dealers.
