It should not be any reflection on womankind that "she" is found in Bolshevik's name. A useless waste of money is found in a|"married man buying a talking 'ma chine for a Christmas present. Congress is getting down to practical patriotism. A measure is to be intro duced making the salaries of senators and congressmen subject to taxation. But three more days are left in which registrants can select the branch of service which they are to enter. This can be done by volunteering. If we ever have any voice in law making, we shall make it a misde meanor for one individual to ask an other: "Is it cold enough for you?" punishable by imprisonment, with no alternative of fine. In normal times some people object to beet sugar, demanding of their grocer a product of the cane, but we rather opine that many erstwhile fas tidious disciplines of Epicrrus will be glad to get beet sugar for their Christ mas coffee. In food stuffs of all kinds, it is no longer a question of what you prefer but what you can get. Piano Recital. The class in piano at the Graded School will nive a recital under the direction of Miss Miriam Norris, on Wednesday afternoon the 19th. The recital is ojien to the public and will be participated in by only thegirlsof thegraded school, the High School recital coming later. There will also be a chorus by the girls of the music classs. The presence of parents and friends of the clash and the school will add greatly to the interest of the recital and inspire the class with more enthusiasm for their work. "A Tribute of Love". Rehoboth community was shocked to hear of the tragic and deplorable death of little Sallie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Cul breath, which occurred Tuesday evening of last week, Dec. 4th. Bright and happy the children were playing in the hall, a loaded shot-gun which was in corner fell and discharged, the load entering her heart. The little farm was laid to rest in Rehoboth Cemetery Wednesday afternoon. We deeply sympathize with the family in this sad bereavement. S?llie was a bright little sunbeam and loved to attend Sunday School. Though not quite six years old, of ten asked her mother questions of God and Heaven, of Angels and death. An Angel plucked the beautiful little wee-bud, ere it was blighted by the chilling winds of sin, suffer ing and sorrows of this life. Her little place is vacant, the little voice is still yet, how consoling. "There is no death, an Angel form Walks o'er the earth with silent tread; He bears our best loved ones away; And then we call them "dead". He leaves our hearts all desolate; He plucks our fairest sweetest flowers, Transplanted into bless, they now Adorn immortal bower. Where, e'er he sees a smile too bright - Or heart-too pure for taint and vice, He bears it to that is world of light, To dwell in Parade." NORTHERN TRIP. (Continued from First Page.) -?-? ; . ? ~ ?? grean bathing ?ap^ on flies -linen cohering the eContents of the tSa^ltet A mischievous soldier said Com panions, look at th| Southern party with a basKet containing half a watermelon. Don't it make yon wish you were away down/South in Dixie?" They then, in chorus, sang the song, while my chaperone re moved what was supposed to be a half water-melon, but proved to be my green and red bathing cap. I never heard such an uproar of laughter. She then passed them the borne made sandwiches which they said they enjoyed more than any thing since leaving the South. Another day in the Camp. A number of soldiers were seated around a companion who had his clothes on atable. With brush and .water he scrubbed them vigorously saying "Boys, it was fun to tea?o that class mate who thonght himself so much smarter tuan us, but failed on his final examinations, for when we were studying literature he was studying bow to win that girl". "When we received our diploma, he received her. Now, we are hav ing the hardships of military pre paration. He is honored witn home pleasures as he has more binding obligations than to volunteer. "We thought him a fool". They theu sang in chorus. "Tbere're a lot of things you never learn at school. There's a lot of things that never go by rule. There's a lot of knowledge you never get at college. There's a lot of things you never learn at school." One said"And it shows that woman is superior to man. All the private men in the United States could not have placed him in a position not to be expected to volunteer". Another challenged him for a debate saying, "Why there are not any great women inventors equal to Bell who gave to the world the telephone" The other replied, "Tell a woman the message, and it will reach its distillation in due time and will be heard by many more than over the telephone, and we would never have heard of Bell had it not been for a woman. He conceived the idea of the tele phone, as he was a teacher of mutes, and was discussing his misfortune in not having the means to experi ment with it when a millionaire with a deaf and dumb daughter offered the means and he became her tutor. She falling in love with him, induced her father to continue furnishing bira the means after he had lost faith in it. She married Bell receiving for her bridal present the patent for the Bell telephone. Why he is indebted to a deaf and dumb woman for his success in that invention. Tell me of any great and noble thing accomplished by man beyond the limit. There is always a woman in it. Another joke. The operator of the phone being called away, left it in charge of a friend, saying, "If Mr. A. cajls for Bell, tell him he has gone ' to service". She mis understanding, said "He has gone to night". The answer, "I hope he will get religion enough to pay up his telephone bill. I will mention another joke, al though it is on myself. I described the old bachelor at the Clove some time aftei we had enjoyed his lecture. One of the young men staying at the boarding house with us, humor ous and witty, connected with the New York World paid the old bachelor a visit. After his return, said he had enquired about the Southern lady with affable manners and her companion who was so pleasingly plump. Thus we derived the nick names of "Affable Manners" and "Pleasingly Plump", while at the Clove. (CONCLUDED NEXT WEEK). CANT DENY IT.
