Jones is in Rock Hill attending the annual State Baptist convention. The Presbyterian ladies will hold their annual bazaar December 18 m the vacant store under the opera house. There will be many attract ive features this year. A meeting of the Civic League wiil be field Monday afternoon, December 1 ,, at the home of Mrs. J. H. Cantelou at 3:30 o'clock. Mr. Bowles Morgan is at home on a week's furlough. He received a very cordial gaeeting from ihis friends here as he passed through Edgefield Monday. Mrs. Mary Anderson, of Schenec tady, N. Pendleton Gaines are delighted to learn th;)t he has been promoted to the position of captaiu in the aviation corps. The United Daughters of the Confederacy will hold their Decem ber meeting al the residence of Mrs. B. B. Jones at 3 o'clock on Tues day afternoon. There is general rejoicing in Edge?eld over the return of Rev. A. L. Gunter to this field. His ministry has given entire satisfaction and all of our people, irrespective of denominational affiliation, are de lighted that he is to be with us an other 2 ear. Mr. Diomede Hollingsworth who .volunteered early in the summer for] service in the navy has completed the course in the naval training school and has been assigned to the battleship Texas, ono of the fineest flighting craft afloat. Dr. A. R. Nicholson, S. B. Nicholson, F. F. Rainsford and H. H. Sanders left this morning at Jjiree o'clock for Georgetown and expect to reach their destination by tonight. They will spend a week on the eastern coast shooting deer, ducks and wild turkeys. The auction sale of horses and mares at the stable of Dr. B. F. Jone3 Monday by the Kentucky Horse Sale3 Company was very satis factory. A number of good horses were sold at satisfactory prices. Another auction sale of mules will be held the first Monday in Jauuary. Through an error The Advertiser last week published Miss Charlton Dozier's name among those who went from Edgefield to Aiken to stand the examination held under the Civil Service commission to fill the vacancy in the Edgefield post office. This is a work of mere; that should appeal to every man woman and child in Edgetield. Doubtless much of Superviso Broadwater's handiwork willoutlivi him. But one enduring monumen to him will be the Meeting Stree road, a veritable boulevard. Work has commenced on an at tractive bungalow which M rs Agatha Woodson will erect on bei lot just north of the residence ol Mr. C. M. Mellichamp. Mrs. A. J. Ives, of Savannah, spent Saturday and Sunday in Edge field. She was accompanied tc Savannah Monday by Miss Sophie Abney who will be away for severa weeks. Mr. S. E. Morgan is having some improvements made on the" plact which he recently purchased from Mr. J. T. Minis, Jr. and will move his family in town before the close of the year. Mr. Clyde Jackson will soon erect a modern cottage or bungalow on ?the site in Buncombe where the Jackson residence was burned about a year ago. That portion of Edge held is building up rapidly. Cogburn has been appointed commissioner of explosives for' Edgetield county. All persons who desire to sell ex plosives muse procure a license from Mr. Cogburn. Mr. E. J. Miras has been appoint ed county chairman for the cam paign for selling war-savings cer tificates and thrift stamps. The sum of two billions of doliars will be raised throughout the country by this means and Mr. Mims has charge of the work' in this county. FOR SALE: A good second hand buggy, newly painted. Bryant has purchased the farm of Mrs.Lemie Talbert four miles south "of Edgefield. The place has been rented for a number of years and is somewhat ''run down" but Mr. Bryant will soon make it one of the best farms in that vicinity. The increase in insurance rates is causing some property owners to discontinue their fire policies. Better carry at least a small amount of insurance and then be very care ful with fire. The entire loss of your home by fire, would fall heavily upon you, especially as building material of all kinds is unprecedent edly high. Won Tv/o Prizes. Mr. L, G. Quarles, the capable representative of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, is making a fine record with his company. During the month of October he won a prize of ?2.50 in gold for having made the secoud highest record of sales in the Aiken division, and during November he occupied first place, winning a prize of ?5.00 in gold. Mr. Quarles has made a gooJ record from the time he entered the employment of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Episcopal Bazaar. j The ladies of the Episcopal church will hold their annual bazaar in the I court house Thursday, December 13. The doors will open at ll o'clock and a nice lunch will be served for 50 cents. Fancy articles of all kinds that will make appropriate Christmas gifts will be sold from attractively arranged booths. The social side of these annual occasions is always very pleasant and for that reason, as well as others, many per sons are looking forward to the bazaar with pleasant anticipations. Let's give the Episcopal ladies a large patronage. Deplorable Tragedy. The sympathy of the friends of Mr. and Mrs, W. P. Cul breath in all parts of the county go out to them in their unspeakable sorrow, caused hythe tragic death of their little five-year-old daughter. While the children were playing in the hall of the home Tuesday afternoon the jar to the building caused a loaded shot gun that was standing- in the corner to fall and discharge, the load taking effect in the chest of the dear little girl. Death was instant. May the Great Physician minister to the bereaved father and mother in their hour of unutterable grief. The interment will take place at Re hoboth this afternoon. The needs of the en tire family can be supplied at a very close figure during this bargain giving sale. Home Destroyed by Fire. Early this morning, about 5:30 o'clock, the home of Mr. M. W. Hudgens in south Edgefield was totally . destroyed by tire. Break fast had been cooked and the fami ly had just finished eating when tire was observed bursting from the cealing in the stove-room near the steve due. Thc alarm was given but it was impossible to extinguish the flames. The metal roof of the building held the flames in the at tic, heating all of the wood very hot. When air was admitted the tire spread rapidly to all parts of the building. Only a small portion of the furniture and personal ef fects were saved. While Mr. Hudgens' loss was very heavy, he was partially insured, having $1,000 on the house and 32,250 in the furniture.
