NEGLECT OF FARM POULTRY Wost Flocks Are Too Small and Are j Not Given Attention and Care They Deserve. We believe that we are justified in faying that the average farmer does ?not give enough attention to the ?poultry side of farming. Experiments |that have been conducted show that ?the farmer's flock may be made a ?profitable part of his live-stock busi ness. Most flocks are too small and ?do not receive the attention, study land care they should, says Utah Farm ler. No live stock pays bigger divi dends when put on a commercial foot j lng and properly managed. It costs I little more to care for a large flock .than for a few hens. Keep a flock for business reasons land not merely from force of habit. ?Mongrels or scrubs are not the kind to have. Get some pure-bred chickens of the kind you like. We would laugh at the live-stock man who depended upon scrubs to build up his live-stock business. Pure-bred stock will nearly always arouse the enthusiasm of its owner and his family. Other essentials to profitable farm poultry are houses, equipment for .hatching and rearing, care, feeding, (marketing, etc. The humble hen pro duces millions each year--the ques tion we ask is, are your getting your share? There is money in poultry-If you do not have the time, turn this part of your farm work over to the boys or girls. DONT USE CAYENNE PEPPER Liver Disease and Kindred Troubles Are General Result of Use of This Stronj Spice. The writer is strongly opposed to the use of cayenne pepper. Then when she steps into the nest tho board being heavier on the outside and hinged at A, tips until the opening to' the nest is closed. The hen is removed from the top of the nest, which is then reset as shown above. MEAT RATION FOR CHICKENS West Virginia Experiment Station Makes Interesting Test-Eggs Are Much Larger. The effect of meat rations was test ed at the West Virginia Experiment Station, where one pen of fowls re ceived a ration largely of corn and other starchy grains, while another pen was fed partly on meat and fresh bones. The meat-fed fowls laid 7,555 eggs, while the grain-fed birds laid 3,431, or less than one-half as many as those receiving the nitrogenous ration. The eggs from the meat-fed fowls were larger, much firmer, rather bet ter, and produced far more vigorous chickens than those of the others. Both lots of fowls remained in a healthy, vigorous condition. Excellent Egg Producer. These products as food are fit for the gods, and as an article of com merce they ought to bring tip-top prices on any market in the world. The products of the soil are teachers and preachers as well. Their beauty gives human life its first entertain ment, their perfection stirs the genius in artists; their purity furnishes mod els for growth of character and their marvelous achievements excite our curiosity and we inquire into the won derful process of nature. Before leaving the parlor of agricul ture where nature is parading in her most graceful attire and science is climbing the giddy heights of perfec tion, let us pause and take a retro spective view. How many of you know that after these wonderful prod ucts are raised, they can seldom be marketed at a profit? Take the blush ing Elberta, for example-they were fed to the hogs by the carload last year. The onion-the nation's favorite vegetable-every year rots by the acre in the Southwest for want of a market and as ? result hundreds of farmers have lost their homes. Cot ton-nature's capitalist-often goes begging on the market at less than cost of production. It is great to wander through the exhibits while the band is playing "Dixie" and boast of the marvelous fertility of the soil and pride ourselves on our ability to master science, but lt is also well to remember that there is a market side to agriculture that does not reflect its hardships in the exhibits at a county fair. UNIVERSAL PEACE This nation ls now in the midst of a controversy as to how best to pro mote) universal peace. That question we will leave for diplomats to dis cuss, but peace within nations is no less important than peace between nations and it ls heavily laden with prosperity for every citizen within our commonwealth. Many leading politicians and ofttimes political platforms have declared war upon business and no cabinet crisis ever resulted. Many men have stood in high places and hurled "gas bombs" at industry; thrust bayonets into bus iness enterprises and bombarded ag riculture with indifference. Party leaders have many times broken dip lomatic relations wjth industry; sent political aviators spying through the affairs of business, and political sub marines have sent torpedoes crushing into the destiny of commerce. Dur ing the past quarter of a century we have fought many a duel with prog ress, permitted many politicians to carry on a guerrilla warfare against civilization and point a pistol at the heart of honest enterprise. No man should be permitted to cry out for universal peace until his rec ord has been searched for explosives, for no vessel armed or laden with munitions of war should be given a clearance to sail for the port of Uni versal Peace Let us by all means have peace, but peace, like charity, should begin at home. 6RASPIN6 AT THE SHADOW No man-especially if he is mar ried-would deny woman any right she demands. Why does woman lay aside the im portant things in life? Why leave the substance and grasp at the shadow? Be it said to the credit of woman hood that it Is not, as a rule, the woman who rocks the cradle that wants to cast the ballot; lt is not the mother who teaches her children to say "Now I lay me down to sleep" that harangues the populace; it ls not the daughter who hopes to reign as queen over a happy home that longs for the uniform of the suffragette.
