Whatever you miss this fall in the way of pleasure and real profit, I Wuuld advise that you do not miss the United States Naval display in Charleston which takes place No vember 18 to 23. It ?8 the grandest thing you will see in a life time. Deprive yourself of other pleasures and take this in as a matter of edu cation. I am not trying to advertise the display, but only speaking a word for your pleasure. It is cheap and profitable. E. C. Bailey. Kentucky Horses and Mules. The erstwhile summer dullness in and around the stables of Wilson A Cantelou has given place to un usual activity. They received 28 Kentucky horses and mules Satur -day and there has been a constant stream of callers since that time. Who does not like to gaze upon a Kentucky thoroughbred? In this lot of 20 or more horses, harness saddle'and combination horses can be found. It has been pronounced by some to be the best car of horses ever shipped to Edgefield. If you need a good horse now is the time to make your selection. ridgefield Rifles Disbanded. By order of Adjutant General W. L. Moore the Edgefield Rifles were disbanded last Friday. Lieut. J. T. Hornsby, the state armorer, came to Edgefield Saturday and shipped the company's arm and equipment back to Columbia. The announcement that the historic old company had been mustered out of service was received with regret in Edgefield. The company was or ganized in 1860 and joined the Con federate army with Capt. Please, Mr. Reader, look on the sunny side, and if there is no sunny side to look on, look any how 3nd perhaps you will be like the fellow who went to church and was fas tonished that a congregation could give such hue attention to such a dry sermon. Well, said "a friend, "It is just this way; that congrega tion is like a cat looking for a mouse to run out even if it never appears." We recently saw this very sugges tive idea on a card which will suit many persons, "O, der troubles ve haf vat don't happen yet." Now, friend, try and look on the bright side, and if there is none, try to help the other fellow just a little and the sun will come out. E. C. B. A Kitchen Shower. Wednesday afternoon Mrs.W. R. Swearingen gave a kitchen shower at her elegant country home in hon or of her niece, Miss Eileen Ouzts. Such a large and varied collection of useful household articles as was showered upon tho bride-elect on this occasion is rarely seen. A con test that consisted of a number of questions whose answers were sup plied by names of kitchen furniture was a source of pleasant diversion. As Miss Ida Timmerman auswered the greatest number of questions she was awarded the prize. At the close of the contest the hostess served a delicious salad course with coffee. Every School Should be Rep resented. Surely the teachers, trustees and patrons of the schools of the coun ty will not have to be urged to take part in the parade of school wag ons that is to be held during the fair. The parade not only has the sanction of Mr. W. W. Fuller, the efficient and public spirited super intendent of education, but he is giving the committee that has the parade in charge the fullest co-op eration. Mr. Fuller has offered two prizes, as bas been previously an nounced. The prettiest school wag on will be awarded $10 and the next prettiest will receive $5. There should not be leBS than 30 or 40 wagons in the parade. Bring the school children to the fair. The day spent here in the fair buildings and in the carnival midway will be a plea-ant oasis for them. Bear in mind tUat trite, yet true, saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." The day spent at the county fair will enable the little fel lows to do better work afterwards. Let every school in the county close for a day and come to the fair in a decorated wagon. Tillman, Chair man Parade Committee, Edgefield, S. C. Dear Mrs. Tillman: Tbe manage ment of the county fair association deserves tho thanks and support of all trustees, patrons, teachers and pupils in planning to make Educa tional Day an important feature of this year's fair. In no other way can community pride and community progress be so effectively reached and represented. The school pirade ?hould induce the active participation of every school. Besides affording an enjoy able outing to the pupils, it will en able the children to meet and know one another, and to feel proud of the advantages of their home com munities. At the same time, it will enable each teacher to study the strong points of her own school in comparison with the advantages of adjacent school districts. The school fair is becoming an important day in many counties. Where the educational interests oan be linked with other activities, as is planned in Edget?eld , the school, the farm, and the home receive a stimulus in common. I hope the educational parade planned by your committee will prove ono of the most interesting and instructive features of tho fair. It will be a pleasure to study the list of the participants, and of awards when these are announced. If the duties of the oliice will per mit nie to attend, I hope to be pres ent ^n Educational Day, in order to meet the children and to enjoy the school exhibits collected by snper mnnminniiii i mimili ny mn Buy Your Fall and 1 -J. Mad at Paint, 25c a gallon for paint is about $2.50 on the average job, and lots of men waited last year for that; but they didn't reckon; they got mad; wouldn't pay it. There are times to get mad and refuse to pay; hut when one's prop erty needs protecting is no time to get mad and not paint. Besides, it costs more to get mad, and wait than to paint. Getting mad doesn't do any good to your property; paint does it good by keeping-out water; no water no rot; no paint, some water and rot; and a little rot is more than enough to make a man liberal toward his painter and paint. Paint costs not a cent. All the paint in th^ world, so long as 'it keeps-out water, costs not a cent. Edgefield Mercantile Company sells it. Nitev Clothing From ite & Co.
