There is iii this state and several other states, an invasion of the fall anny worm on corn, grass and cot ton. This caterpillar is about 1 to li inches long when grown. It is quite different from the cotton cat erpillar although many farmers mistake one for the other. This in sect which is now in this state is not the cotton caterpiller which did so much injury to cotton last Hum mer, but is the fall army worm which is sometimes called the grase worm. The fall army worm is usually present but in such small numbers that they do no harm to the crops but on the other band eat the grass in the fields. It is only when this insect gets abundant that it does harm by eating grass, corn, peas and cotton. The weather conditions this season have been unusually favorable for its development. Most farmers who have seen the work of this insect realize that immediate action is necessary for the control of this pest. ? Control Measures-The two poi sons that have given the best satis faction so far are powdered arse nate of lead and Paris green. Paris green c:m usually be bought ata local drug store, while as a rule ar senate of lead is not handled by sach dealers. The arsenate of lead can be secured from wholesale deal ers and most all ^eed houses. How to Distribute the Poison About six inches from each end of a board one inch thick and four in ches wide, and twelve inches longer than the width of the rows, bore a hole one inch or more in diameter. Cut two pieces of cloth, 20x14 in ches, the cloth being about the weight of 8 oz. duck. Make two' bags of these pieces of cloth and tack one on each end, securely un der the bole in the board. The holes in the boards may be closed with wooden stoppers made for that pur pose. The bags are about 5 inches deep and 15 inches long.? This ar rangement can be carried on foot or on a mule and two rows treated at tho same time. Apply in the morning while the dew is on the plants but do not get the bass wet. If Paris sreen is used repeat if rain wa hes ir off. Amountof Poison to Uso-For cotton three feet hiirh use the fol lowing amounts of which ever poison in used. The amount varies according to whether the cotton is smaller or larger than throe foot high. And in the cace of corn and oilier plants vary accordingly. Arsenate of Lead-4-5 pounds per acre. No danger of burning. Paris Green -1 to l\ pounds per acre-On large plantations where quick work is imperative, the Paris Green should not be used in quanti ties materially exceeding the dose given above as there is danger of scrioti>ly barning the foliage. The second generation will like ly app ar ?ti about three or four ireeks after the present generation disappears and will possibly be more numerous; it will bo well to keep on the lookout for the secon I outbreak.
