Burts left Monday morning for Anderson and Green ville. He will spend most of the week , in the latter city attending the Baptist Assembly at Furman "University. Dr. Burts drove to Plum Branch Monday, where his horse and buggy will remain until he returns Saturday. Miss Fairy Adams, daughter of Dr. E. S. Adams, of Garrison, Tex as, has arrived m Edgefield to visit her uncles, Messrs. W. S. and W. W. Adams. It will be remembered that she attended the S. C. CI. several years ago and made many friends while among us. This beau tiful young lady from the far-off Lone Star state is being very affectionately greeted by her Edge field friends. James S. Byrd, 'will be pleased to learn that she has planned to go to New York in August to take spe-1 cial lessons in vocal culture under a very celebrated teacher. He has a summer home be tween Caesar's Head and Breva rd, where for several years his family has passed the summer. The County . Baptist Sunday school convention will be held at Red Hill Wednesday and Thurs day of next week. This will be one of the largest religious gatherings that will be held in the county this year. One of the finest farms in the county is that of Mr. J. W. Hardy, and, taking it all in all, he has the best crop that the writer saw while journeying to and from the Yorice barbecue Saturday last. Mr. Hardy not only makes fine crops but he improves his land year by year. Knowing something personally of the real pleasure to be derived 'from a trip over the Carolina Clinchfield and Ohio railroad, the writer would like to see at least a score of Edgefield people take ad vantage of an excursion that is being arranged for the latter part part of the month. Misses Ola and Annie Bush, the two beautiful and very talented young ladies from Spartanburg, are receiving much'delightful .social at tention. Mrs. John R. Tompkins entertained a number of young peo ple very beautifully in their honor Thursday evening and Mrs. Abner B. Broadwater entertained at her ideal country home in their honor Friday evening. Every Acre a Prize Acre. While en route to the Yonce barbe cue Saturday morning the editor of JThe Advertiser, made it a point to go by Mr. B. R. Smith's prize acre of corn, which has been such a gen eral subject of conversation. We have never before seen so many stalks of corn upon an acre of land. Instead of being the same distance apart, the/rows alternate with two and four feet-a wide and a narrow middle.1" The c?rn was planted very close and is almost as impenetrable as a river-b?ttom cane brake, espe cially since the wind blew a large portion of the corn down. It is impossible to estimate the yield of th*?, acre with any degree of accura" cy. The corn has been considera bly damaged by the wind, to what extent is difficult to say. Be the loss what it willjMr. Smith will har vest a large number of bushels from this one acre. His son, who is a member of the corn club, also has a very fine acre. The fact is every acre of corn on Mr. Smith's ,farm has the .appearance of being a prize acre. He does'nt grow any "sorry" corn.. An Opportunity to Take Cheap Trip Over Clinchfield Road. Acting in concert, the chambers of commerce of Spartanburg and Columbia have arranged a trip over the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio railroad, leaving Spartanburg for Dante,iVa.,on July 26 and returning on thc 28th. The officinls of the road, who are very courteous, capa ble men. have engaged Pullman coaches and dining cars, and will conduct the excursion upon the same plan that the recent South Carolina press excursion was conducted, i The round trip from Spartanburg tjo Dante, Ya., including Pullman and dining oar service both ways, will be $17. If we mistake not, the Southern railroad will put-on a spe cial round trip rate. It is gener ally conceded that mountain scenery can not be found any where east of the Rockies which surpasses that along the ''Clinchfield Route." This is a splendid opportu nity to take the trip. Profound sorrow prevailed in Edgefield yesterday when it became known that Dr. Gwaltney had pass ed away at his home in Rome, Ga., Monday .afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, In his eightieth year. Owing to the crowded condition of our columns and the late hour of the arrival of the sad intelligence, we can not say in this issue what is in our heart to say of this saintly man and of his life of service. A fuller notice will appear next week. Letter from White Town. Editor The Advertiser: It has been some time since I have seen anything from this part of the county. Mr. Editor, I want to ask you to publish a few lines for the benefit of our worthy school teacher, Mrs. Mamie DornVwhom we have had for the last three years, as there are some reports going out on her. I can say that Mrs. Mamie Walker is as high-toned ?ady as there is in the county, and pne of the best teachers that Ave have ever had.
