He was a native of this county, being a brother of Mrs. C. B. Blalock, and had many warm personal, friends among the older generation. Miss Mary Strother came home from, the Confederate Home in Charleston Thursday last to attend the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Char lotte S. Guerard. As she bad com pleted examinations in most of her studies she will not return before the opening of next session. Mi*. Jerome H. Courtney was in our oftice Monday and stated that the wheat and oats contest has taught him that it pays to fertilize grain. His yield on land that he fertilized has been three times as great as on land where no fertilizer was used. Miss Eliza Mims has begun ber class in painting for the summer. Those desiring to take lessons in painting should see M^iss Mims at once. A splendid opportunity is afforded those who desire to develop their talent as artists. Mr. John Kennerly is spend ing several days in Edgefield, hav ing come to attend the marriage of his son, Mr. James B. Kennerly. He has been most cordially greeted and his friends fiope, that he can be induced to prolong his visit. Miss Edwardina Blalock will re turnedMondayfrom Converse college where she has been taking a special course in music during the past ses sion. She will teach a private class at her home during the summer. Miss Edwardina ip well equipped for teaching. After completing the course at the S. C. C. L, she taught one year at Elkin, N. C., and then went to Converse for special in struction in music. Married, by Re\. P. P. Blalock Sunday afternoon, June 4th, at the borne of the officiating minister, Miss Fermelia B. Ransom and Mr. G. T. Powell. The bride is a mem ber of Berea church, of which Mr. Blalock is pastor, and the groom is a prosperous young farmer who re sides five miles north of Edgefield. Dozier and Edward Lynch from Davidson. Will Enter Active Ministry. Rev. T. E. Dorn, who has been teaching school successfully for sev eral years in charge of the Zoar High School, Saluda, S. C., wishes to devote himself to the work of the ministry. He was ordained about a year ago by Brethren J. A. Carson, D. H. Crosland, and A. McA. First Honor Graduate. v We congratulate our fair young friend and neighbor, Miss Ellen Dunovaut, upon the splendid record she has made ait the College for Women.. ^Sorne time - ago she was elected president of her class and was during the past session business manager of the college annual, but greater than all of these honors was the position she occupied in her class. Of the sixteen who gradua ted last week, Miss Ellen was the first honor graduate. Any young lady should be very proud of a di plomafrom the College for Wo men but to hold one as a graduate with highest honors is one to be coveted. Again we extend sincere congratulations. Buncombe, Pig Town-and all Edgefield-welcome her home-coming most cordially and affectionately. Death of Mrs. Guerard. As announced briefly last week Mrs. Charlotte S. Guerard died in Savannah early Wednesday morn ing, June 1st Her remains, accom panied by her nephew, Mr. William Guerard, at worse home she died, were'brought to Edgefield Thurs day aftefnooon and laid to rest in the family buriar ground near the home that she loved so well and in which,.she had passed so many hap py years. Rev. Royal Shannon house conducted the funeral. . Mrs.\ Guerard waa a woman, of unusual force and strength of mind. Her life was one of Christian ser vice. In the benevolent work of her church, Trinity Episcopal church, she easily ranked among the lead ers. Her wise counsel and -well poised judgment were sought and deferred to whenjany new enterprise or work was to be undertaken. "Mrs. Guer ard will be greatly missed, in the hvitrtej but nowhere will the loss ?.-vcasioned by her death be more cuehly felt than among her co \rorke#s of Trinity church. ' Before her marriage to Capt. Ed gar L. Guerard, she was Miss Char lotte Strother and is survived by two brothers, Messrs. A dastardly deed was the attempt to kill Mattie Oliphant, the colored woman who -cooks for Mr. and Mrs. John B. Hill, on Wednesday night, June 1st.
