The annual commencement enter
tainment of the Edgefield graded
-school will be held Friday evening,
May 13th. An elaborate miscellane
ous program is being arranged, and
a fuller announcement will be made
in a subsequent issue,
Mrs. B. B. Jones ' is in Sumter
this week attending the South Caro
lina Federation of Women's Clubs
as the representative of the Edge
field Literary Club. While in Sum
ter she will be the guest of Mrs. R.
I. Manning.

nent speakers to address the stu
dents.
Mr. W. B. Cogbum has purchas
ed a typewriter for recording public
records. The . machine is ad
justed over a book and it writes
upon the pages just as the ordinary
machine writes upon a sheet" of
paper. Every clerk of court in the
state except six has a book type
writer.
We were delighted to learn
through Mr. John (rriflisof the con
tinued improvement of Mr. J. Gor
don Bussey who recently became
over heated while fighting fire. To
show how intensely Mr. Bussey
suffered, while he was in paroxysms
of pain ten stalwart men could
scarcely hold him in bed.
Col. F. N. K. Bailey has pur
chased Hon. W. A. Strom's auto
mobile. The Ford machines have
been thoroughly tested upon Edge
field county roads, and have not
been found wanting in any particu
lar. Col. Bailey, accompanied by
Chauffeur J. H. Hill, made the trip
to Colleton county last week in his
automobile. He returned Saturdaj*,
traveling a distance of eighty miles
in a day.

This faithful creature always laid
an egg of the same size as the por
celain nest egg used on her as a de
coy. ?
Perceiving the hen's intense am
bition, the farmer put a porcelain
gcose egg in her nest. She laid a
goose egg.
Then the farmer greatly pleased,
put in the nest a whitewashed foot
ball. The next time he went to the
barn he found an egg O. K. but no
hen was in sight.
He took up the egg and saw en
graved on it:

W. W. Adams talk of their recent !
trip to Cuba. Dr. Tompkins says

off quietly last Wednesday, result-1
ing in 95 votes for Mr. John R.
Tompkins and 59 for Mr. W. P.
Calhoun. An election will be or
dered in the 5th ward the latter
part of May to elect a successor to
Mr. Tompkins. We understand that |
Mr. E. S. Johnson and Mr. S. A.
Brunson will be candidates for the
place.
Married, by Rev. L. D. Gillespie,
at the Methodist parsonage, Sunday
afternoon, April 25th, Mr. Frank
Turner, of McKendree, and Miss
Clinton, of York county. The groom
is a son of .'Mr. and Mrs. W. E.
Turner, and the bride is the very
accomplished young lady whp has
been teaching the McKendree
school.
Next to shooting a large deer we
can not conceive of a more thrilling)
experience than gigging a ten pouad I
fish. A party of young men went |
striking in Stevens creek last week
and Eddie' Agnew, a son of Mr.
Sam Agnew, had tim good fortune
to gig a ll-pound cat fish behind
the "ears." The blow was such a I
shock to the fish that it threw itself)
upon the bank. Eddie says he would
not take live dollars for the experi
ence of gigging a 11-pound cat. \
An Anecdote.
"What is an anecdote, Johnny?''
asked the teacher.
"A short funny tale," answered the
little fellow.
"That's right," said the teacher.
"Now, Johnny, you may write a)

ing the word."

Miss Annie Clisby arrived from
Boston Monday to remain with Mr.

Edgefield we trust that she will

Miss Mary Julia Roper, daughter
of Mr. S. L. Roper, arrived Mon
day to spend some months with her
cousin, Mrs. P. B. Mayson, and is
being very cordially greeted by her
friends. She has< been em
ployed as trained nurse by the gov
ernment, serving in California,
Panama and New York. Miss Roper
has given up her work' altogether,
and it has reached The Advertiser's
ears that a very wealthy gentleman
from New York will be making
frequent visits to Edgefield during
spring and the early summer.
