Simkihs acted as prosecuting attor ney: in his stead. |||- After receiving the usual charge, Ipthe grand jury passed on a number of cases, finding the following true bills: I ' Goff Black and Joe Smith, mur ;. : .der) Albert Evans, throwing mis sile in train; Fleming Curry, asr sault and battery with intent to kill and carrying concealed weap ons; Rafe Adams and Albert Ad ams, murder; Henry Holmes, dis . posing of property under lien; Clarence Elam et al, house break ing and larceny. The first case disposed of was that of Josh Peterson indicted for murder, a verdict of not guilty being rendered. J; Wm. Thurmond, Esq., represented tie defendant and S. M. Smith, Esq., the state, Albert Evans was convicted of the charge of throwing missiles at and into a train, receiving a sen tence of five years on the county chain gang. He was not represent ed by counsel. Goff Black and Joe Smith were indicted for murder, S. M. Smith, Esq., representing the former, J. Wm. Thurmond,. Esq., the latter, and S. McG. Simkins, Esq., acting for solicitor. The charge against Joe Smith was withdrawn and Black was found guilty, Receiving a sentence of life imprisonment. The grand jury has been unable so far to find sufficient evidence against Jim Cain and Nancy Brim son who are charged w"rh killing Jesse Barnes near Beaver Dam sev eral miles .vest of Edgefield last year. - Civil Court. \ On the convening of civil court j Monday morning, the first case called was that of Mr. P. H. CorleyJ against the Southern Railway com ' pahy, being a suit* to recover $2,000 j damages.'Mr. Corley is the sheriff of Lexington county, and wajs put1 * off the train by the conductor at some point in North Carolina, the\| . plaintiff having failed to have his j ticket countersigned by the agent at the station wh?re he boarded the, train. The mother of Mr. Da,vis J was* very Ullin February 1008, ?nd? a telegram was sentto him at Edge field advising him of her illness, j But for 'some reason Mr. Davis failed to receive the telegram, hence his suit to -recover damages under the mental anguish act. The plain tiff is represented by Messi-s. Shep pard 3ros. and S. McG. Simkins, Esq., ?and the defendant company by Messrs. Nelson & Nelson, of Columbia, and Messrs. Tompkins, & "Wells. _' The Poet-Scout Captain Jack Crawford, the poet scout is on the Georgia circuit now, shaking hands with his old friends. "The Bronco Book" is the title of his latest volume ^of poems. The Roycrofters printed it for him in handsome style, and Captain Jack's best work is found beneath its vel lum covers.-Atlanta Constitution. Capt. Crawford will lecture at Johnston under the anspices'of the U. D. C. on March 18th, and the members of the W. C. T. U. are arranging to have him come to Edgefield. Capt. '. \ Supply of Fish in the Savannah Nearly Exhausted by Num erous Fishermen. - It seems that the dam nuisance ?which we wrote about last week will not be easily abated.' WhiLe'the writer was in conversation with Mr. G. W. Medlock, who spent last week in Edgefield in attendance upon court as a juror, he stated that there is but little hope of there ever being any great increase in the supply of fish in the Savannah river above the locks. Mr. Medlock is a close observer and a very intelligent gen tleman, and having resided within three quarters of a mile of the locks for a number of years is in position to speak upon this matter as "one having authority". He witnessed the construction of the present fish way, and says it has never been sat isfactory; that in order to pass over the dam the fish would have to be provided with a step ladder. Fur thermore, Mr. Medlock is of the opinion that a properly constructed fishway would not now very mate rially increase the supply of fish above the locks. The river has been so thoroughly fished with net^s and hooks of every conceivable kind that the supply is largely depleted. Mr. Medlock who himself seems to be a fisherman of no mean repute says that soon after the dam was constructed fish congregated in the waters immediately below the dam in large quantities and that fisher men came from far and near and bagged them in great quantities, in cluding many fine shad and trout, while now. the supply even below the dam is well nigh exhausted by the fishermen all along the river from the city of Savannah np.* For Sale Real Estate No. 101.
