Rives returned Satur day afternoon, after spending ten days in New York purchasing a tremendous spring stock for Messrs. Rives Bros. Mr. Rives is a buyer of large experience, having made many trips to market. He is an ex cellent judge of goods, and stated to The Advertiser's representative that he was greatly 'pleased with the spring offerings of merchan dise, also with the prices. The annual inspection of the local military company was held yesterr 3av morning^the inspecting officers^ being Lieut. Chas. H. Cabaniss, U. 3. army, and Cpl. William T. Brock, assistant Adjutant and In spector Genend. Capt. Collett and Iiis company thirty one strong, pre sented an exceedingly creditable ap pearance, and there seems to be no iloubt of . their having measured up to the required standard. After tjie inspection the soldier boys, with ;he inspecting officers and newspaper nen as their i guests, partook of a lelightful barbecue that was pre pared by the renowned chef, Mr. A. A. Edmunds. County League Formed After the reading of an excellent paper in the opera house last even ing by Dr. O. B. Mayer, also in teresting talks upon tuberculosis by Dr. Asbill, Dr. D. A. J. Bell and Dr. C. E. Burts, a county Anti Tuberculosis League was formed by electing the following officers: Dr. R. A. Marsh, president; Mrs. J. L. Mims, vice:president and Mr. J. H. Allen, secretary and treasur er. Mr. May has a very strong line of shoes, and, having been assigned to a good territory, the outlook is that he will book ajarge number of orders. He secured several orders from the Bdgefield merchants while here. Large Mission Collection. The sermon in the Baptist church Sunday morning by Dr. Arch C. Cree was probably the ablest pre sentation of the subject of missions, as well as, the strongest ^appeal, ever heard in Edgefield. The splen did collection that was taken for foreign missions immediately after the sermon amounted to ?532. Dr. Cree and Dr. Burts were very much gratified by the generous response. Fire in J on ns ton. A very disastrous fire occurred in the town of Johnston between nine and twelve o'clock Tuesday night, burning" ?>onre five or si.t stores. Among the stores destroyed were those of Mr. J. N. Lott, Johnston Drug Company and Mr. J. C. Lewis. We haye been unable to learn full particular. ^ Mr. Rubecetein's Milliner. ' Mr. J. Hubenstein will give spe cial attention to his millinery de partment during the approaching spring season, having made larger purchases than ever before. He has engaged Miss Fink, a very gifted milliner from Baltimore, to take charge of this department. She will arrive to-day. Miss Fink has for some'time been associateel with one of the largest. millinery houses in Baltimore, and comes well equip ped for her duties. Counting Pieces of Mail. During the month of March all R. F. D. carriers throughout" the ,county are required to count every] piece of mail handled each day, The post office department is dc sirous of ascertaining whether or not the people fr.long the routes are patronizing thom sufficiently to warrant their continuance. We do not think Edgefield's route is in jeopardy, but voule} like to see it j generously patronized, especially during this month. "Uncle Sam" should have ofdered the count made while Valentines were Hooding the mails, but possibly April Fool's Day missives will make up for the deficiency.
