EDG?FEELD ADVERTISER I Established 1835. J. Lc MTMS .... EDITOR TERM?: ONE SHEAR 1150 SIX MQNT?S .75 WEDNESDAY, JAH. 13, IBO?. ff That which we a? we aw Ithe while teaching, not vol* $ untarily, but involuntarily.- I ilCWMERflOy., J The income tax law has been de-j flared constitutional. But that is. one law that does not trouble news paper men. The Darlington county man who j was married the sixth time the oth er day should open a correspond ence school. Some of Edgefield's] bachelors should get in communi ' cation with him at once. The death penalty of six Ten nessee "night riders" and life im prisonment of two others will put ; quietus on the flagrant lawless ness that has prevailed in that state during the past year. In addition to money, dispatches j state that the whiskey forces in Nashville are using ''beautiful fall en women" to prevent the passage of a statewide prohibition law. Heavens, to what depths liquor can drag men and women! The Edgefield County Fair next fall will be what the people make it Therefore, let every citizen re solve to take an active interest in the enterprise and assist in making it the best county fair in the state. Dixie is a land of almost per petual summer. This winter has been so mild that last year's cotton stalka are blooming near Augusta; . snake stories come from Anderson; grasshoppers are hopping in Geor gia and mosquitoes are biting in| Fdgefield. The legislatures of Tennessee and j Texas are both grappling with the liquor question, and " South Caroli na will soon line up with them. It is stated that the i law-makers of Tennessee will pass a state-wide prohibition measure over the veto of the governor. Good Order Due to Prohibition. Prohibition is always put to a se vere testvduring the- Christmas sea son. Owing to the prevalence of an erroneous impression to the effect that greater license and latitude are allowed at this season, it has been the wont of many in the past to grati fy their appetites and give themselves over to all manners of debauchery. Be it said to the lasting credit of the people of our country", the Christ mas just past was a striking excep tion to the festive seasons of the years gone by nuder the old whiskey regime. Reports have reached ns fr?m different parts of the county to the effect that almost perfect or der prevailed during the recent^holi days. While in conversation with Mr. J^F. Payne on Saturday, tie. writer was pleased to learn of the greatly improved conditions in the Meeting Street section. Mr. Payne said, the Meeking Street camp, W.. O. .Wi' gave two oyster suppers-one just preceding Christmas and the other daring the ^holiday-in order to raise funds with which to properly equip their hall, and that, contrary to the experiences of the past, per fect order prevailed. There was no drunkenness at either of these func tions, and the absence of whiskey was very generally and favorably commented upon by the Woodmen who were responsible for the proper . management of these social gather ings. Mr. Payne further started that when the dispensary was located at Edgefield the older and more thoughtful citizens of hu- communi ty dreaded for the young people to have a party or social gathering, for Some young .men of that community, as well as some from adjoining neighborhoods, would always pro Vide a supply of ' liquor for the oc casion. As a result, not infrequent ly their parties would end in a row; always in confusion and disorder, tinder prohibition conditions have changed. A new order of things now exists. After all, the greatest good that comes through prohibition is re moving the temptation from the boys and young men. It will not re form those who became addicted to strong drink under the old bar room dispensation, but prohibition is making- sober young men of the rising rreneration, .Fc-r- this reason, the good effects of prohibition -will become moir, -and more apparent as the years pass. . ~ . Son. 4. C. Sheppard Endorsed. Ata meeting of the Edgefield bar on Saturday laBt the following reso lution was. adopted: "Whereas by reason of th? res ignation of Chief Justice Pope, a vacancy will occur oh the supreme court*bench of this state to be filled at the ensuing session of the gener al assembly, resolved by the bar ->f Edgefield. in meeting assembled that we unanimously ' endorse and re commend for election as associate, justice our distinguished ' fellow citizen, Hon. John. C. Sheppard, be lieving that a member of the pres ent supreme court pench should and will be promoted to the position of? chief justice."* The General Assembly could make no better choice than tins distinguished son of Edgefield. Mr. Sheppard would wear the ermine with grace, dignity and ability, re flecting credit upon~ himself and upon South Carolina. A <iV ' ?il'. The New Division. Elsewhere , in this issue will be found the program of the' union meeting of the newly formed third division of the Ld gen eld Associa tion. The initial meeting will be held at Parksville on\ Saturday and Sunday. January 30th and 31st, at which time a permanent organiza tion will be effected. The program - is well arranged, the topics being varied and the speakers being Chris tian workers of experience who are capable of entertaining and greatly edifying their hearers. From the very outset we predict for the third division a successful future. Divid ing the old second division and holding two union meetings on the fifth Saturdays and Sundays among churches where only one was held before will lead to the drawing out and development of new material, thereby increasing the number of Christian workers. Who'll Contribute Next? We have had interesting and very, valuable contributions from "Red Crank*1 and ?'White Rocks;" now we should hear ;from "Barred Rocks," "Wyanddtt," "Leghorn," "Game Cock," "Jersey," ^Guern sey," "Short Horn," "Angora," "Guinea Pig," ^l?erkshire Boar," "Merino Ram," "Racer," or "Baa lam." The Advertiser would be pleased to publish: one or more let ters each week from poultry'and stock raisers, setting forth the mer its, or demerits, as the case may be, of this or that breed; Such ar ticles wou^d 'encourage and stimu late stock raising, as well ats aid in arousing interest in the County Fair Who'll send in the next letter? Gentlemen, send,1 in your letters. These winter evenings are too long for you to plead lack of time as an excuse. The Advertiser is anxious, as ie evidenced by the. gold prizes we are offering US *c'orn growers, to arouse the people'sod to do its ut most to make the County Fair a suc cess. But the people the msel ves have an important part to perform, and we believe that ?they will enter heartily into it Send in your letters. The Adver tiser will make room for all of them. P. S. The Robertson & Elkins firm, about which we wrote in our slat, will,, in a few days, begin the erec tion of a large brick store on post office lot. The bank Hrill also in the near future commence to erect a magnifient new home on a beautiful corner lo,t. , The farmous Twin City Power Company will also begin operations in a few days. ^ The Woodmen camp here, Tues day night resolved, that they need ed, a newx brick hall in which to meet: therefore further resolved, that they form a joint stock compa ny of Woodmen only, making 200 shares of ten dollars each, allowing no one share, nor more than 20, so that no one member can own a con troling interest in the same. The idea is to build a two story brick structure, 40 by 60 feet. The first story to be used as a store and coun cil chamber, and the second story for the fraternities, lyceum courses, etc. There are 70 members of the Woodman camp here, and this un dertaking being laudable and praise worthy is not a h?ird or impossible undertaking, and we one and all bid the Woodman God speed.
