The state campaign meeting is being held to-day, Wednesday, at Saluda. On Thursday the weary office seekers will lay their claims before a portion of the Edg?field voters and on Friday they will go to Aiken. Mr. D. A. Tompkins spent Thursday last iu Edgefield. He has so many irons in the fire, large business interests over tho . country, that he never tarries among us more than a day at a time. Cotton bas been siuce it was plauted from two to three weeks late, but now that the nights are getting warm it will grow very rapidly. The old rale was that cotton did its best whru the nights were so bot that one could uot sleep with any "kiver" on the bed. Mill edge Coate, the negro who shot Mr. J. B. Hargrove, causiug the los3 of oue eye as well as otherwise disfiguring him for life, was acquitted at Greenwood last week. We knew nothing of the difficulty but were somewhat surprised ct the acquittal. 0. Sheppard, Esq., left last Friday for Charleston to attend a meeting of the board of visitors of the Citadel. From Charleston he will go to Greenwood to attend the annual meeting of the trustees pf Connie Maxville orphanage. We do uot claim to be authority on melon growing, but it appears to us that the last week in Juue is unusually earlv for ripe watermelons in this part of the country. Nine acres are being cultivated after the Williamson plan and eleveu after the Broadwater plan. The harvest is anxiously awaited as it will de termine which of the two is the batter plan. Rev J. T. Littlejohn and some -of the nimbera of Rehoboth * church are planning to hold a temperance rally ai Rehoboth on the secoud Sunday iu July. We trust that they will succeed in arranging for this special meeting. There ia not a community in the couuty that would not be benefit ted by a special meeting or this kind. Al most everybody in the whole com munity seemed to be present, and a number of visitors from Edge field, Trenton and elsewhere. Struck Deaf by Lightning. According to a report published in the Augusta Chronicle, Mr. GporgH Reynolds, a farmer who resides iii the Sweetwater section of this county, had a horse struek deaf by lightning last week. A portion of the stable" was torn down by lightning and the horse was severely shocked but recover ed after a few hours. It was after wards discovered, however, that the horse had lost it? power to hear. There are probably very few cases of this kind on record. Examinations July 3rd. Examinations for scholarships in Winthrop, Clemson College and the College of Charleston will be held at Edgefield by the county board of education on Friday, July 3rd. These are very valuable scholarships aud should be eager ly sought after by a goodly num ber of young men and young wo men in our county. The ambi tious young mau will not let this opportunity of obtaining an educa tion at Clemson or the College of Charleston pass ; nor should the young ladies of tbe county let the Winthrop scholarship gi begging. He is now ut home on bis valuable farra below Trenton where he will reside permanently. Prof. Courtney JS a graduate of the Citadel and has made a very successful teacher. While having a coffin delivered in his store Suuday night, Mr. B. B. Jones was painfully bruised by the fa' 1 of the elevator. The rope which holds the elevator slipped fmm the pulley, causing it to fall fifteen or more feet. Mr. Jones' many friends regret his misfortune but rejoice that it was not moro serious. On Thursday afternoon Mrs. J. B. Haltiwanger pave an elegant bridge party in hot.or of her auut, Mrs. Cora S. Ligon, of Andersen.
