Even the cotton around Trenton does not appear to be as well advanced as some iu the clay section of the county. The imposing brick building ot Messrs J. M. Wise & So*), of Tren ton, is neariug completion. When this new building is entirely com pleted it will add greatly to the appearance of tho business square of our sister town. We know that it will be a great undertaking to clean the average back yard io Edgefield, but be cause it bas been so long neglect ed makes moro imperative the "need that it be thoroughly clean ed. Dr J. Q Adams, of Charlotte, has be*>n spending the past week with Dr. Manly Timmous and Mr. B. Timmoua. He visited his] old home and the scenes of his boyhood near Elmwood on Satur day. As compared with the old way, it appears to be plant ed in a canal or railroad cut, and has to grow some woeks-iu its half starved condition before it is tall euough to peep over tho em bankment. If you don't clean np your premises in the next few days, along with all of tho other fo'ks in town, your neighbors will come to the conclusion that your bick ya^d ii in such an awful condi tion that you did not care to un dertake sucu a job. Better get I usy. In spite of the high price .of corn, mules and horses throughout the couuty are looking weil. The j well-kept condition and good ap pearance of stock, notwithstand ing that the hard-work season is on, is due to the fact that a good corn crop was made iu this couu ty last year. When we saw a "b?ge crate ( luscious peaches in the.exprei office a few days ago* for a popi lar Edgefield belle, how we di wish that we too were a prett young lady and could feast upo peaches, candy and other nie things at the expense of someb")d else. The Advertiser acknowledge the receipt of an invitation loth commencement exercises of Zoa High School, of which Pref T. E Dorn is the able principal. Th Hon. D. C. Heyward and othe distinguished speakers will de liver addresses. ^ It ia very generally regrettei that Miss Hattie Newsom will uo teach again next sessiou in th? graded school. Although ber worl has been difficult, she has neve: during the entire time that sb* hiB taught in Edgefield failed ti give satisfaction, being paiustak ing, conscientious, efficient. * Those who heard the sermon o Bishop Gu^rry on Sunday morn ing have / pronouueed it a ver*, masterly discourse, At the clos* of this sermon Miss Emily Stroth er and Miss Mary Strother, daugh ters of -Mr. Julian R Strother anc: Mr. David Strother, respectively, and Mr. Arnoldus Lewis and Mas ter Carroll Raiueford were con firmed. It may not be an eloga?t foru of expression, but to say that the plum trees are ..plum" full tbif year is literally true. Every tree along the road side is bending over with green, yellow or rec plums. If a good fruit year makef a good crop year, the farmers will be "in the swim*' next fall. The puhlic square at Trenton besides being adorned with F.coref of beautiful shade trees, has had j its appearance greatly enhanced by tho planting of flowers and shrubbery by the ladies of the town who aTe interested in civic improvement. But for the good ?wompn. the couutry would soon 'go to the bow-wows. j Handsome Dozier Lynch is at I home from Davidson college for the summer -vacation. He bas scores of friends who have great hopes for his fu ture career and are watching his development year by year. Is it Your Yard? We bave heard it said that (jome people iu Edgefleld eau not sit on their piazzas at night be cause of the disagreeable odor? that come froto premises in the neighborhood. Great Scoti ! Tb?6 is au awful charge-ono that we do hot like to put in print-but we do so in the hope that it will cause the people of Edgefleld to wake up and clean up. "Leen" Most Out. A colored man remarked to the writer the other da}', in a tone of distress: "BOPS, what am I gwiue ter do? My leen is about out eu de black berries ain't ripe." We advised him to apply for an ex tension of bis "leeu" for a few weeks. Merchant ought to be more cor.'siderate and make the "leen" big enough to last till blueberries come iu. Good Crop of Oats. Mr. Walter L. Nicholson was in towu Saturday and white in con versation with Tbe Advertiser's renreeeutative etated that he will make uetweeu 400 and 500 bush els of oats this year. Besides wash ing up much of the growing crops, dee^ gullies were mnde infields that never washed before. Great sympathy is felt for those who lost heavily by the cloudburst. Rather Unique Contract. We beard the other day of an agreemeut which, cousidering the calling of the parties thereto, was rather a unique contract. A color ed Baptist minister in an adjoin ing CLunty contemplated holding a revival meeting, and engaged a brother minister of the Methodist persuasion to assist bim. The lat ter was to receive $2 per day for bis work, if they bad a good meet ing. Sixty-seven names were ad dt-d to the church roll, but the hired parson remarked afterwards that he took "particular" pams to get bis $2 every uight. The writer is always pleased to see a cordial, good feeling exist ing between ouposing candidates. A beautiful example of this came under our observation on Sunday las\ There are three candidates out for cotton weigher, ruid two of Ih^m, Mr. Walter L. Holston and.Mr. Bud Bryan, went up to Gilgal in the same buggy and took dinner at the church with the third candidate, Mr. T. P. Morgan. The people of Edgefield county are often twitted by out siders for their inherent political proclivities, but fbe ab)ve por trays politics of the right kind, politics with no taint or tinge of "mud" about it.
