A cable message, to the South ern Baptist convention, announc ; ed the sudden and sad iutelli g?nce that Pearl Hall Lake, the beloved wife of our missiouary, . RfV. John Lake, h?d passed away. Mrs. Lake was Miss Pearl Hall, . of Indiana, and had been a mis sionary ?J Cniua for about six . years, going out from ber home in ? Indiana in 1902. Previous to -her ? marriage to Mr. Lske last sum ; mor sue was at Yingiak, trans ferring ber missionary labors to i Canton after their marriage. It was a great comfort to the friends and relatives of Mr. Lake when they hpard last summer that he was not all alene iu China, but had the crmpanionship and sym pathy which he go much needed. She was so young and happy and the 'peop'e of Edgefield were awaiting with bappy^expectation for the time to come when these two ivould return to America for a rest in lees than two years t'me. But that hope eas been shattered, and we must await the time when we can meet her in the blessed country, where she is now at. rest. The woman's missionary uuiou'of Edgefield association had adopted Mrs. Lake as their missionary and had become greatly interest ed in her and the? work she was doing in far Cathay, so that this news was a great shock to hun dreds of people in Edgefield and turougbout the state. Sweariugen, bas entered the field for sheriff of Edgefield county, which makes it now a tour cornered race. Mr. Sweariugen is a member of an old, representa tive Edgefield family and resides five miles northwest of tho county seat. He isa (sterling citizen and prosperous farmer, managing his ufFa.irs with signal success. Mr. Sweariugen is fuily capable of discharging the duties of this office, aud if elected will do hi6 utmost to give entire satisfaction. Old Sleepy Creek Church. While paying The Advertiser a call on Saturday, Mr. T. J. Mc Dowell gave us au additional item of inlormation concerning old Sleepy Creek church. Mr. McDow ell said that when the old church was torn down his great-grand fattn-, . Mr. William McDowell, built a kitchen of the hewn pine logs of which the church was con structed Tho kitchen in a reasonably preservi-d condition still stauds to-day in the yard of the old McDowell homestead, which is uow owned by Mr. S. Dr. Miller stands high among the members of his profession, being one of the vice-presidents of the Georgia dental association. Dr. James A. Dobey, au Edgefield young man who bas achieved success in his profession, is associated with Dr. Miller. The professional card of Dr. Miller will be fou^d in this issue. Wagonette Capsized. A merry part}' of fifteen left in a wagonette late Monday after noon for the . commencement at Johnston. All ?veut well until they were . nearing Harmony church, when the mules left the main road and turned the afore said wagonette bottom side up wards ou its pas8eug?rs. Some were quite painfully bruised, all were more or less frightened, but. cone were seriously hurt. The somewhat disfigured and greatly disabled vehicle was patched up sufficiently to bear up those who received the severest bru ises. The major portion of the fifteen, both youug men and young ladies, had to returu upou foot. The list of passengers aboard were Misses Mattie Carmichael, Kate Pattison, Ruth Tompkins, Mary Lily Fish er, Marie Tompkins, Jenuio Patti son, aud Mrs. Susan B. Hill as chaperone. The young men were Messrs. James Tompkins, James Hilton, Edward Lynch. Vivian Minis, Charlie Key,.Jesse Eidson, Willie Jackson aud Percy Byrd. After all of the wounded were dragged from under the wagonette aud the wreck was cleared away, a wholo bushel basket of combs and bracelets and fans, mostly combs, were gathered up.
