Tho Juvenile Missionary Socie ties of the Columbia district of the Methodist church have taken upon themselves the supp >rt of a mis sionary in Cuba. The members of the society of the Edgefield Methodist church work faithfully in order io contribute their quota of this missionary's Balary. They gave an entertainment at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Boyd on Friday afternoon in or der to raise mouey. Coal Being Substituted for Wood. . Many persons in Edgefield have aln-ady stoied away their fuel for winter. Up to this time more.coal has been shipped to this placp than ever before during the early fall. This h probably due to thc fact that wood is about twenty ?ve per cent higher, and difficult to obtain even at the advanced .pricps. Many who have burned both coal and wood say that at present prices it is cheaper to buru coal. Advice to the Young. The beBt advice, says tbe York ville Enquirer, we aro able to give to any young person, whether that young person be boy or girl, young lady or young man, is to acquire the habit of saving There is no habit that can exert a greater in fluence for good over tho life and character of any young man or young woman, and no habit is likely to prove of greater future benefit. We would not be under stood as commending miserliness or niggardliness. Caieful, intelli gent saving does not imply any thing of the kind. Gives Him up Reluctantly. Mr. J. B. Boyd resigned th* position of superintendent of the Edgefield cotton mill in order to accjpt a similar position at Clin ton, S. C. He has already loftus to enter upon his new duties, and will be joined by Mrs. Boyd and the two little girls in about a week. Mr. Boyd has been a very valuable citizen in this commu nity, and especially has be made hie usefulness felt in th? religious life of the community. Possess ing very decided talent as a vocal ist and choir leader, Mr. Boyd will also be missed in the musical circles of the community. Edge field givf.s these good people up with reluctance bul wishes them much happiness and prosperity wherever they go. Or Edwin Hall Coming'. Of the lecturers, imperson ators and humorists wiro tour the south none are more pop ular than Dr. Edwin Hall. Besides chaste and refined humor, his lectuies contain much of the philanthropy of life, good moral lessons that inspire and elevate those who hear them. Dr. Hall has de lighted very large audiences on three former occasions in Edgefield, and it ig but rea sonable* to expect that this popular lecturer will be greet ed by a large audience in the opera house on Friday night. Tickets on sale at the store of May & Tompkins at popular prices. Oyster Stew. For the inexperienced cook the recipe for a fine cyster stew is given in the Ocobrr Woman's Home Companion. "Put one quart of oysters In a colander, and pour over three fourths of a cupfull of cold water, reserving the liquor. Pick over the oysterri, being careful that no particles of shells adhere to the tough muscles. Heat the reserved liquor to the boiling point, strain through a double thickness of cheese cloth, add the oysters, and cook, stirring occosionally, until the oysters ars plump and the odges begin to curl. Remove the oysters with a skimmer to a heat ed tureen, and add one fourth of a cupful of butter, one half table spoonful of salt, one eighth of a teaspoonful of pepper, the oyster liquor, strained a second time through a double thickness of cheese cloth, and- four cupfuls of scalded milk." Tompkins, Esq., spent a portion of last week in Union on business. While returning home on Friday afternoon he chanced to meei Dr. Geo. B. Cramer and Congressman Wyatt Aiken at Trenton, who were also coming to Edgefield. Instead of waiting several hours for the train to go to Aiken and return to Edgefield, they decided to walk to this place. The two long-legged gentlemen thought Mr. Tompkins, who is a light-weight, physically, would soon fall by the wayside. But not so. Mr. Tompkins is so accustom ed to walking that starting him on a journey afoot is about like pit-jhing Brer. Rabbit in the brier patch.
