Unquestionably the largest hog that ha3 been slaughtered in j . Edgefield couuty was killed by j Mr. S. W. Gardner wbo i epides in tb,e southern portiou of the coun ty. This hog weighed 442 pounds net. And besides ihis large one, Mr. Gardner killed several that netted 300 pouuds. This gentle-* man'is one of the few farmers who,, as the expression goes, "lives at home and boards at th? same place." Not only does he make an abundance of everything at home to supply bis owu table, but be sells large quantities during the year. Some persons may wonder bow Mr. Gardner has saved such large meat this mild winter. The secret of his success is in using an abundanoe of salt. Some use salt very scantily, consequently lose "much of their meat. The national Temperance League of Japan iu annual con vention recently at Yokomama adopted the following: "That the convention seud greetings to thc Hon. Dr. Johns in a brief and informal way, but in an exceedingly pleasant find happy manner, told of his per sonal acquaintance with Lee, and related some iuoideuts that were very interesting. Bisnop Johns, the father of Dr. Johns, aud Gen. Lee were neighbors. The exorcises were cloted with prayer by Dr. C. E. Burls.
