These commissioners have met and appointed the mana gers for the federal and state elec tions to be held on November the 6tb. Burgess is the ouly Presbyterian minister in the couu ty but, being very zealous and active, be covers well his large, field. He even makes ah occasion al visit beyond the borders of his regular field of labor. Several Presbyterian families reside at Saluda court house, among whom Rev. Mr. Burgess spent several days last week. There is no or- j gaDized Presbyterian church al that place but it is probable that when the Presbytery meets steps will be taken to organize one. This is well, for the growth and uaefuluees of any Christian, is im paired by not being actively identified w.th a local church. Dr. Len G. Broughton Coming. The first number on the Lyceum course of the ensuing season will be a lecture by Dr. Len G. Brough-1 tou, the celebrated Atlanta minis ter and lecturer. Dr. Broughton ton is booked for the evening of Tuesday, October the 30th. The first session of the Woman's Y'. 8ionary Union will also be held on that evening but the hcurs will b9 PO arranged that all who desire can attend both. Mr. C. E. May has requested us to announce that all holders of season tickets are expected to call at his store at once and select their seatp. Those who call first will get the most de sirable seats for the entire season. Court Proceedings. In the case of the State vs. A. R. Coles, indicted for killing Goode Gomilliou in the town of Johnston last spring, the jury failed to agree and a mistrial was ordered. Messrs. J. W. Thurmond and N. G. Evans represented the defendant and the Solicitor and S. McG. Simkins Esq., the State. Charlee Zimmerman, who kill ed Jim Stevens near Meeting Street in January last, was found guilty of murder with recommen dation to the mercy of the Court. Capt. N. G. Evans was the de fendant's counsel and the Solicitor represented the State. Simon Weils, tried for violating the dispensary. law in the town of Johnston, was found guilty, sen tenced to 18 months ou the cbain gang and to pay a fine of $100. Hon. J. W. DeVore represented the defendant. John Williams was convicted on the charge of house breaking and larcen9y and sentenced .to five years ou tbe chaingang. Defend ant had no counsel. Mack Rouse* was convicted of selling whiskey at Mt. Canaan church in the lower part of the c unty, and received a seutence of six months on the public road's of the county or pay a fine of $200. IS; Holton spent Sat urday and Sunday with the home folks. While here he told the Ad vertiser's representative of s re cent visit to Statesboio, Ga. This prosperous town is situated in southern Georgia about seventy five miles from the coast and. strange to say, is the largest mar ket in the world for Sea Island cotton. Notwithstanding the fact that the coast is nearly a hundred miles away, there is a section about twenty miles square around Statesboro in which Sea Island cotton is very successfully grown. The soil there between two Geor gia rivers and the atmospheric conditions are peculiarly favorable to its growth. Nowhere else in cotton growing countries is Sea Island cotton successfully grown on upland or inland soil.
