The crowds ?grow smaller and the speeches shorter. The Spartanburg Herald says that the farm lalor of that county is far less demoraliz9d under pro hibition than while the dispensa ry was in operation. South Carolina still holds sec r- ond place in the matter of cotton manufacturing. A recent bulletin issued by the census bureau snows i that there are about 3,000,000] spindles and 75,000 looms in operation iu this state. * As the campaign is being con ducted at present the daily papers j are "getting decidedly the advan tage. Thej devote a very limited epace to the speeches, while so.ne of the candidates devote most of their time to "cuspia" the. press, which is splendid advertising for : the papers. The young man who is strong in mind and hedy, and who has steady, sober habits, is the one who ?B in demand. When a thor oughly business "mau has a va cancy to fill a?d advertises for ap plicants, you will invariably'find in his advertisement these words, "only sober men wanted1', or "no drinking man need apply " The youDg man who forms the drink habit voluntarily takes upou him ?elf t?4 weight that prevents his j runnfag successfully the race that j is set before him. Hon. William Jennings Bryan ie scheduled to reach New York, after completing his tour around the world, on August the 30tb. Such fines as these will have much to do with restraining the railroads from fla grant violations of law. Ministers And Politics. The writer has never concurred in the idea that ministers should take no part or parcel in politics. Oftentimes moral qaestipns arise, the solution of which affect so vitally the weal or woe of society, that it becomes the unmistakable aDd imperative duty of a minister of the GoBpel-both as a minister and as a citizen-to take an active interest in politics. The Green ville Mountaineer has the follow ing to say bearing upon this sub ject : "To put it mildly, it ?6 always provoking to us to hear a man say that preachers should not dabble in politics. One would think from the way some men talk that a preacher-was not a 'citizen in the ordinary acceptation of the term, and hence should not stoop to mingle in "dirty politics;" that a minister is something more than an ordinary man,-a religious leader, as it were, who should stand aloof from matters of earth and'concern himself merely with the spiritual side of affairB. There may be some ministers who take that view of it, but we believe there are precious few of them who are now of that opinion. We dou't believe ministers ought to be poli ticians in the ordinary accepta tion of the word "politician", but they should, be leaders of the peo " pie, leading them to higher and nobler things, to a better realiza tion of their duties as citizens. If ministers would lake more inter est in politics, if th? people would follow their advice and leader ship and not be BO glib about swallowing the words of some scheming, dirty politicians who have no use for them except the vote they can give as an aid to their own glorification, we are! sure the days of "dirty politice"! Would be numbered. There is such ? thing as clean politics but to j have such we must follow leaders! whose every word and deed is above reproach. Let the preachers, take a hand and we are quite eur?) there will be purer politics in South Carolina. When wo hear a! man expressing regrets that minister meddles in politics, we are quite sure we have spotted one| who does not wish to see any im provement, it suits him too well M it is. Red Hill is the place for the great barbecue The candidates for Congress will be present and will tell the people all about national affairs, and the candidates for the legislature will be present and tell us all about county affairs. The public is iu vited, and there* will be a great crowd here that day. Comp, meet and mingle with your friends. Remember the time and place. Mr. Clark was kicked by a horse in Augusta last week. A cut over the right eye came near b'ing serious. He was carried by friends to a boarding house, and attended by a physician. Mr. Clark is much better at this writiug, and hopes to be able to be out in a few days. Children's Day was observed at Colliers last Saturday. Quite a large crowd was present, notwith standing the down .pour of rain. All tue children did their parts well. The music was especially good. After the exercises, there was a splendid dinuer served, aud after the dinner, ice cream and lemonade. There is not a better community in the world than in and arouud Colliers.
