C., Special.-A dis patch from Aiken says: Mrs. E. B. Wilson, wife of a well known farmer, living about 12 miles from here, near Beech Island, was shot and probably mortally wounded at 1 o'clock Wed nesday morning, thc bullet having been tired through a broken pane in the window of her bedroom. Mrs. Wilson was in bed. with lier young baby add in the ltexfc room slept her husband and two other children. Two pickets were found off the yard fence and the foot prints of a man discov ered leading to and from the place. Charged With Murder. San Francisco, Special.-Earnest Denicke, wealthy San Francisco banker and capitalist, was arrested herc on thc charge of manslaughter. Denicke was released later under a bond of $3,000. On April 20 it is said Denicke, wearing a uniform of a lieutenant of the United Stales army, shot and killed an unidenlilied man on Lombard street wharf. The woman, who gave her name as Selia McCarry, is said lo bc in a serious condition. .Jealousy is said to be the cause of the deed. He Committed No Crime. New York. Special.-Thc Supreme Court of thc appellate division decided that eGo. W. Penkins, of the linn of J. P. Morgan & Company, committed no crime when he contributed money of the policy-holders of the New York life Insurance Company to the cam paign funds of thc Republican parly. Justice Greenbaum is reversed nw] Perkins discharged from custody. v?hat is Being Done Day by Day ?y the National House and Senate. Alcohol Bill Paased. After considerable debate thc Sen ite passed the bill relieving, dena tured alcohol from the internal reve nue tax and then took up the agr: eultural appropriation bill, -which was still under consideration when the Senate adjourned. Thc disposition if the alcohol bill turned largely upon the effect of the legislation on the manufacture of wood alcohol, which Senator Aldrich asserted would be jreratly injured. There was also considerable dis cussion of the amendment authoriz ing \h? purchase cf samples of all Berums and ?iitJ-toxius for the cure of animals, and it was denounced by Mr. Hala as another sten in thc di rection of poterualism which he de precated in strong language. Sena tor McCumher supported provosion as iii the interest of proctection of the public against poisonous and other j wise daugcrous decoctions. The ?amendment was agreed to. In connection with the provision making an appropriation "to origi I nate crops by selection, eic,/' Senator Hale ??aid this was an effort to im prove on natil?r? and he congratu lated Senator Proctor, ?t? charge of j the bill on getting "nearer the' )*ue or absolute control by the Federal government than any one else had ever gotten before." The Senate passed the so-called free alcol ol bill as it was reported from, the committed) on finance. Thc bill already has passed the House and thc amendments which the Senatj has adopted do not materially change its scope. It does liol ?c? into effect until January 1, ]D07. Preparing for the Campaign. Several weeks ago Mr. Rainey of Illinois made a careful ly prepared speech ou the walch trust, asserting that the watch manufac turers of thc United Stales had one price foi- Watches at home and a les ser price for Watches abroad. Thurs day in the house Mr. Charles B. Lan- j dis of Indiana, in a sense, answered Mr. Rainey, frankly admitting that American manufacturers had one price at home and another abroad, and he defended the practice as in accord with good business methods, insist ing that all. countries sold their wares for less prices abroad than at home. Mr. Landis also paid some attention to a speech made by Mr. Bourke Cock ran (N. Y.), wherein the latter de nounced the policy of protection as one of public plunder, the fountain source of all conception and the cause of total demorilization of the Ameri can republic. Thia Mr. Landis de nied. He said that every poor but ambitious immigrant who landed hera during th.i lust ten years would re fute that allegation. Referring to Mr. Cockran s, speech, he said: "This is the best country on earth, and not the worst country on earth. And if 1 thought about it as the gen tleman from New York, I would re sign my seat in this house, sell out my belongings and move to some other country nearer in harmony with my political notions.7' Mr. Williams Takes a Hand. Mr. Williams of Mississippi, the minority leader, in answer to Mr. Lan dis, spoke bf thc conditions leading up to thc appearance of General Coxey's anny on the grass about the Capitol. He stated that he had walk ed through Coxey'a army while it was encamped on the grass in front of the senate entrance to the capitol and at that lirrjc tho Wilson-Gorman bill was under discussion in the Senate. He insisted that thc government was still operating under thc McKinley bill at that time, and that revenues were being collected under that Republican measure. Mr. Williams said lie was encourag ed in Hie fight thc Democrats wen' making in favor of tariff reform be cause of the number of Republican leaders who were dashing to the relief of the protective tariff.
