Early Monday morning, befoul the school children had assembled or the teachers had taken their respective places, we took a peep . into the graded school building to see the transformation that had beeu wrought' by the painter's brush, which was wielded und>*r the guidance and supervision of the teachers. The erstwhile dark, dreary aud uninviting class room?,, which were anything but inspiring to the pupils, are now bright/ pretty, ?attractive. The walls and ceiling bavH been painted a light cream, while the desks and wain scoating are a pretty cherry. The floors have received a liberal coat ing of cherry stain, and tho stoves and black-boards have also been repaired. Chippewa Tribe Number 14 Organ ised. (Communicated.) Our town was over-ruu Satur day evening with visiting Red Men, whose mission was the adoption of many "pale fases" of Edgefield into the mysteries of the order and the institution of a new Tribe here to be known as Chippewa No. 14. The Great Sachem of the state was in charge of the impressive ceremonies and at his behest dele gations met him on the new hunt ing ground. They came from Choctaw, Eagle Eye and Kicka poo Tribes in this state and, by special invitation, from Pappoose Tribe, Augusta, Ga. The Council Fire was kindled in the opera house as the regular Lodge Hail was not of sufficient capacity. It was far into the night, br "sleep" as that word is known to the order, before the ceremo nies were concluded. ? Wierd Indian songs, war-whoops rattling of tomahawks, peals of thouder, firing of musketry made those who know nothing of the mysteries, feel tba1: real Indians were in our midst. A delightful supper was served by the new members, iu honor of the visitors whou the ceremonies were over. We wish Chippewa No. 14 every success. Its membership is com p >sed of most excellent material. It hes already several applications for membership. The following officers were installed: Prophet, James H. Tillman, Sachem, P. B. Mayson, Ser. Sagamore, W. G. Reynolds, Jun. Sagamore, M. P. Wells, Collector Wampum, A. T. Covar^ Keeper Wampum, L. E. Jackson Keeper of Records, J. C. Tim merman. The three trustees chosen were L. Dear Sir: The easiest business in this world is dry-goods; the reason is : your customers want your Btu ff as much as j ou want to ?eli it ; they come-in ; you show it and Bell it. That's the whole business, except your buying the goods. Devoe comes next. It sa ves money, and people, like money. They like somebody else's more than their own ; they like to make it more than to save it; they like to keep it perhaps as well as to make it. Buildings run-down {fast with out paint; poor paint is the same. Devoe is the means of stopping that leak ; a big one. All we've got to do, to sell Devoe, is to show that a man saves money by using it. E. D. Jewell, Corry. Pa., paint ed his house 5 years ago with a mixed paiut; 14 gallons. Last spring he painted Devoe; 10 gal lons. Saved $15 to $20. Yours truly, F. W. DEVOE & Co. The Edgefield Mercautile Co. 69 Sleeplessness.
